The main Embassy's task is to represent Sweden, the Swedish Government in the UK and to promote Swedish interests.
The Embassy handles a large number of applications for Swedish passports, registrations of newborns, visas and other consular and official matters. Some twenty five persons work at the Embassy. They have a Cultural Counsellor, a Defence Attaché, ten diplomatic and twelve locally employed staff. Three posts are funded by other Swedish Ministries or Public Authorities.
When applying for a passport one needs to make an appointment online. The passport section at the Embassy deals with a great number of applications. It is recommended that the applicant book a passport appointment at least six weeks before he/she wants to apply. The fee for an ordinary passport or a national ID-card is SEK 1 400, equivalent to £138. The fee is the same for both adults and children. The fee must be paid upon application. One may pay in cash or by bank card. The Embassy does not accept cheques.
Normal processing of a passport is about two weeks. One must collect the passport in person at the Embassy or at a Consulate.
If a Swedish passport has been lost the person can apply for an emergency passport. An emergency passport is issued for one single imminent journey only. The maximum validity of an emergency passport is seven months. The Embassy will need to see proof of urgency. The Emergency passport is usually issued the same day.
NOTE:
- All documents have to be submitted in original and the application form filled in.
- Biometric photos and fingerprints are taken at the Embassy as part of the application process
- The Embassy is unable to accept an incomplete application.
- The applicant must collect the passport in person from the passport section.
- Parents/legal guardians may collect a child's emergency passport provided they can identify themselves (valid passport or photo ID).
