Consular Section provides these services:

  • Registration and change of address abroad;
  • Issuance of passports and identity cards;
  • Issuance of civil status certificates;
  • Swiss citizenship matters;
  • Allowing Swiss citizens to participate in electoral events;
  • Assistance to Swiss citizens abroad in case of emergencies;
  • Social security and social insurance for Swiss citizens matters;
  • Legalization of documents;
  • Issuance of Swiss criminal records;
  • Issuance of visas.

The loss or theft of a Swiss ID document abroad must be reported as soon as possible to the local police as well as to the relevant Swiss representation.
A police report (declaration of loss) is also required to make it possible to prepare a new identity document, such as a temporary passport.

Various regulations apply for entering Switzerland. A basic distinction is made between citizens of EU and EFTA countries and those of other countries.
Third state members in possession of both a valid passport as well as a valid Norwegian or Icelandic residence permit or travel document are exempt from visa requirements for a maximum stay of 3 months within a 6 month period if they return to Norway or Iceland after the trip
