As the official representation of Switzerland, the embassy covers all matters concerning diplomatic relations between the two countries. It represents Swiss interests in the areas of political, economic and financial affairs, legal arrangements, science, education and culture.

The Embassy provides consular services related to the following matters:

  • Issuance of attestations and certificates;
  • Citizenship matters;
  • Civil status affairs (marriage, birth, death, etc.);
  • Issuance of criminal records;
  • Emergency assistance for Swiss citizens in distress;
  • Legalisation of documents;
  • Issuance of passports and identity cards;
  • Political rights to vote;
  • Registration, deregistration and change of address;
  • Social security and social insurance;
  • Registration of Swiss citizens abroad.

The loss or theft of a Swiss ID document abroad must be reported as soon as possible to the local police as well as to the relevant Swiss representation. A police report (declaration of loss) is also required to make it possible to prepare a new identity document, such as a temporary passport. Some countries may require such a document in order to leave their territory. It can also be useful when seeking reimbursement from an insurance company.

Portuguese citizens do not need a visa to travel to Switzerland. These instructions apply to short stays (up to 3 months).

Documents required for entry into Switzerland (both for adults and children):

  • Valid Portuguese National Identity Card (Cartão de Cidadão) or
  • Valid Portuguese passport or passport expired within the last 5 years (travelers are nonetheless advised not to travel with an expired passport)

It is up to each individual to decide which of these two documents he or she prefers to travel with.

The Embassy is closed on weekends and public holidays.
