The British High Commission in Wellington, together with the British Consulate-General in Auckland, represents the UK government in New Zealand. They are also supporting and protecting UK interests in Pitcairn Island and Samoa.

The High Commission is working to support the full range of British interests in New Zealand, building Britain’s prosperity through increased trade and investment in open markets and supporting British nationals who visit and live in New Zealand through the consular services answering over 3,000 enquiries yearly.

The main services provided by the Embassy include:

  • Visas
  • Emergency travel documents
  • Births, deaths and marriages
  • Travel advice
  • Legalisation Service
  • Notarial services, etc.

NOTE: No British Embassies or High Commissions deal with UK passports as of Jan 2014. These are dealt with by HMPO in the UK.

You can apply for an emergency travel document (sometimes known as an ‘emergency passport’) if you’re a British national outside the UK and your passport has been lost, stolen, damaged or has expired.

An emergency travel document allows you to leave the country you are in and travel to your destination via a maximum of 5 countries. The emergency travel document can also cover a return journey if you are resident in the country you are applying from. An emergency travel document does not guarantee entry to every country. You may also need a visa. Check with the embassy or consulate of the country or countries you are intending to travel to or through.

The emergency travel document will only be valid for the journey that you specified when you applied and for a specific period of time. This will be shown on the document.

The visa process time that can be expected if one applied for a UK visa in New Zealand:
90 per cent of non-settlement applications within 3 weeks, 98 per cent within 6 weeks and 100 per cent within 12 weeks of the application date; and
95 per cent of settlement applications within 12 weeks and 100 per cent within 24 weeks of the application date.

Customers have to send their documents to a PO Box in Auckland. Documents are then forwarded to our East Asia processing hub in Manila. The processing times relate to the time after the application arrives in Manila and assume that the customer has completed the biometric enrolment process before sending the application. Customers can make an appointment for biometric enrolment at INZ offices in Wellington, and Aucklandf The transit time to and from Manila is up to 5 days each way.
