The Embassy supports the British Government’s policy goals in Portugal. This involves influencing the Portuguese government on a range of foreign, defence, economic and other issues, helping British businesses secure contracts in Portugal and encouraging foreign investment in the UK; and helping resident Britons and British visitors in Portugal when they may need consular assistance.

Consular services provided by the Embassy:

  • Passport renewal;
  • Emergency travel documents;
  • Births and deaths;
  • Marriages;
  • Legalisation service;
  • Notarial and documentary services;
  • Emergency consular assistance.

Passport application will take at least 8 weeks from when it’s received by Her Majesty’s Passport Office in the UK. If a person hasn’t already reported the loss or theft, he/she must include form LS01 with his/her declaration form. He/she may have to attend an interview.

British nationals outside the UK can apply for an emergency travel document (sometimes known as an emergency passport), if their passport has been lost, stolen, damaged or has expired. An emergency travel document allows British national to leave the country he/she is in and travel to their destination via a maximum of 5 countries. The emergency travel document can also cover a return journey if they are resident in the country they are applying from.

British Embassy in Lisbon does not deal with visa matters. 

EU citizens may remain in Portugal for a maximum of 3 months without registering. Citizens of Portugal do not need a visa to come to the UK.

UK based services are charged in GBP while local services are charged in Euros.

The Embassy is closed on public holidays.
