The High Commission develops and maintains relations between the United Kingdom and South Africa. The High Commission also covers Lesotho and Swaziland. They deal with a wide range of political, commercial, security and economic questions of interest to the UK and South Africa. The High Commission, and our consulate in Cape Town, provides consular assistance to British nationals in South Africa.

The main services provided by the High Commission include:

  • Visas
  • Births, deaths and marriages
  • Passports and emergency travel documents
  • Travel advice
  • Legalisation Service
  • Notarial services, etc.

In addition to the services listed above the High Commission can also:

  • provide information about transferring funds to relatives detained abroad
  • provide appropriate help if you have suffered rape or serious assault, are a victim of other crime, or are in hospital
  • help people with mental illness
  • do all we properly can to contact you within 24 hours of being told that you have been detained
  • offer support and help in a range of other cases, such as child abductions, death of relatives overseas, missing people and kidnapping
  • contact family or friends for you if you want
  • make special arrangements in cases of terrorism, civil disturbances or natural disasters

One can renew or replace the passport at any time. It costs £72.50 by post or £81.25 through the Post Office’s Passport Check & Send service. Time left on an existing passport is added to the new one - up to a maximum of 9 months.

The new passport will be sent to the applicant either by courier or Royal Mail Recorded Delivery. The postman or courier will then do one of the following:

  • hand the passport to the person if he/she is at home
  • deliver the passport with the rest of ones post
  • leave a card or send a letter to tell the applicant where to collect the passport or how to arrange redelivery

  • March/April - Easter Monday and Family Day
  • 28 May - Queen’s Birthday Privilege Holiday
  • 27 May - Spring Bank Holiday

  • 9 August - National -Women’s Day
  • 24 September - Heritage Day
  • 16 December - Reconciliation Day
  • 24 December - Christmas Privilege Holiday
  • 25 December - Christmas Day
  • 26 December - Boxing Day
