The State Department has begun issuing a new type of passport book containing an embedded electronic chip and called an “Electronic Passport”. The new passport book continues to be proof of the bearer’s United States citizenship/nationality and identity, and looks and functions in the same way as a passport without a chip. The addition of an electronic chip in the back cover enables the new passport book to carry a duplicate electronic copy of all information from the data page. The new passport book is usable at all ports–of–entry, including those that do not yet have electronic chip readers.

The new passport book does not require special handling or treatment, but like previous versions should be protected from extreme bending and from immersion in water. The electronic chip must be read using specially formatted readers, which protects the data on the chip from unauthorized reading.

US Embassies and Consulates will achieve this goal by transferring the passport issuance function to a domestic US passport facility. This will increase processing times at US Embassies and Consulates, but the Department is committed to ensuring that American citizens receive secure documents in a timely manner. American citizens are encouraged to apply early for renewal of expiring passports.

If you have any questions regarding the above procedures, please write to HelsinkiACS@state.gov or American Embassy, Consular/ACS, Itäinen Puistotie 14 B, 00140 Helsinki, Finland. You may also call +358-40-140-5957 between 14.00 and 16.00 Monday to Thursday.

For payment for the services rendered by the American Services Unit, the Embassy only accept payment in US dollars and euros. For passport issuance that requires a personal appearance you may use cash or major credit cards (no debit cards) or travelers checks.

All American citizens and alien residents of the United States men between 18 and 26 years of are required to register with Selective Service as soon as they reach age 18 (or for new residents, become a US resident). Registration is the process of providing the Selective Service with personal information, such as name, address, date of birth, Social Security Account Number and other related information about one's self. It is a civic and legal responsibility.

Citizens of Finland traveling to US must have a valid passport (that does not expire before the end of their visit), but do not require a visa for stays of less than 90 days within a six-month period.
