The Consular Section provides visa services for citizens and residents of Latvia. It also provides services to US citizens including, but not limited to: notary and passport services, birth registration, assistance for US citizens in case of emergency, death registration, and assistance for US citizens wishing to vote via absentee ballot.

The Embassy cannot act as your travel agent, bank, interpreter, employment office, lawyer, investigator or law enforcement agent, or assist with other personal matters. However, they may be able to provide guidance on were to seek help.

US Embassy can assist with the following emergencies:

  • Assistance for US Citizens Arrested in Latvia
  • Assistance to US Citizens Victims of Crime in Latvia
  • Death of US Citizens Abroad
  • Medical Emergency or Illness of US Citizens
  • Replacement of a Lost or Stolen Passport
  • Emergency transfer of funds

US citizens residing or traveling abroad who require issuance of a US passport are issued the latest, state-of-the-art passport incorporating a photo-digitized image and other enhanced security features. US embassies and consulates achieve this goal by transferring the passport issuance function to a domestic US passport facility. The Department of State is committed to ensuring that US citizens receive their documents in a timely manner; however, the citizens are encouraged to apply early for renewal of expiring passports.

US embassies and consulates prepare and issue passports on the site in emergency cases. Such passports are limited in validity and cannot be extended. Emergency passport holders are required to exchange their limited validity passports for a full-validity photo-digitized passport upon completion of their emergency travel. Passports can be exchanged either through passport facilities in the United States or US embassies and consulates abroad.

Fees can be paid in US dollars or euros; in cash or by credit card.

The Consular Section of the US Embassy in Riga provides US Citizens Services Monday through Friday between 14.00  – 16.00. Appointments are required, except for emergency services. Situations such as the arrest, serious illness, injury, destitution, or death of a US citizen constitute emergencies. Should you require assistance in the mornings, an appointment may be offered Monday through Friday between 8.30  – 12.00; however, that time is reserved for visa applicants, thus you might expect longer waiting time.

Notice for Visitors to the Consular Section
For security reasons, no laptops, mobile phones, video or photo cameras are allowed in the embassy's Consular Section. Visitors are reminded to leave their cellular phones with the security guards during the time of their admission to the Consular Section.
