This Mission includes approximately 310 US and 560 locally engaged staff employed by 28 US Government departments and agencies. In addition to the Embassy in Pretoria, there are Consulates in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Many US Government departments, such as the Foreign Commercial Service, the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Health and Human Services, Overseas Foreign Disaster Assistance and Food for Peace have based their regional operations in South Africa, reflecting the facilities and services available in South Africa.

The US Mission Provides Services:

  • Represent the people of the United States, the US Government and President Barack Obama and his policies.
  • Protect and promote US interests, such as the safety and welfare of US citizens in South Africa.
  • Encourage and facilitate trade between the U.S. and South Africa.
  • Sponsor educational exchanges, and counsel students seeking to enroll at US universities.
  • issue visas for travel to the US
  • Support South Africa through partnership programs in a number of areas including health, education, economic development, agriculture, combating terrorism, building democracy and helping to assure regional stability.

All visitors are subject to MANDATORY screening by security force. All briefcases, purses, and shoulder bags will be inspected. The Embassy and Consulates are equipped to hold temporarily small portable electronics such as cellular phones, radios, and pocket organizers.  The Embassy and Consulates are not responsible, however, for any loss or damage to items deposited with the security force.

Visitors are not permitted to bring the following items on the Embassy or Consulate grounds or inside the facility:

  • Firearms, explosives, knives and sharp objects
  • Vials and other containers that could carry chemical or biological agents
  • Personal laptop computers
  • Cameras
  • Cellular phones, pagers, radios, pocket organizers, and all other portable electronic devices

American Citizen Services (ACS) is part of Consular Services, based at the US Consulates in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Assistance is provided to American citizens residing in or visiting South Africa, including but not limited to Passport services, Consular Reports of Births Abroad (CRBA), and Notarials. The consulates also assist in emergency situations, including deaths, arrests and crisis situations. Routine passport/citizenship and notarial services are by appointment only at Cape Town and Johannesburg Consulates.

All South African consulates are closed for non-emergency services on weekends, US and South African public holidays. The consular section in Johannesburg is closed on the last Friday of each month. The consulate in Cape Town is closed every Friday.

Passports – The Consular sections in Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg all process United States passport applications. Currently the processing time for most passports is seven to ten business days. Applicants under 16 years of age must appear in person at the Consulate with both parents. Minor applicants who may have changed drastically in physical appearance are advised to bring photos showing the child in the years since the previous passport.

Non-Immigrant Visas are processed in Visa Sections at three United States Consulates in South Africa located in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban. US Consulate Johannesburg processes applications for Immigrant Visas to the US. The US Embassy in Pretoria does not provide any visa services. Applicants for visas in the Pretoria area should apply at the US Consulate Johannesburg.
