Consular staff can:

  • provide advice re lost or stolen passports if you need to travel urgently,
  • help you contact family or friends to request emergency funds,
  • provide a list of English-speaking lawyers, and contact family and friends on your behalf, if you are detained or arrested,
  • provide advice on local medical facilities, help contact your family and or insurance provider if you are ill or injured,
  • help with arrangements following a death overseas,
  • in certain circumstances, provide notarial services such as witnessing affidavits, statutory declarations and other documents for use under New Zealand law,
  • account for New Zealanders who may have been affected by a major overseas crisis, such as civil unrest and natural disasters.

Consular staff at the Embassy in Tokyo, and Honorary Consulates in some regional centres, is able to carry out notarial services.

If your passport has been lost or stolen overseas, you should:

  • obtain a police report, then
  • decide whether to apply for a replacement passport or an Emergency Travel Document (an Emergency Travel Document will have a restricted validity dependent on travel circumstances).

Japan is a visa waiver country, therefore citizens of Japan don’t have to apply for a visa before travelling to New Zealand, if they are visiting for 3 months or less. They must have a ticket out of New Zealand to a country they have the right to enter and enough money for their stay. They must also be in good health and good character.

A visa must be applied for if the travel is for medical consultation or treatment.

The Embassy is closed on public holidays.
