Quality International Curriculum:

Photo of Journalism & New Media School in Bangalore, IndiaThe curriculum has been developed in association with Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, New York. In order to retain flexibility in its course offerings, IIJNM does not seek any national accreditation. As an independent institution not affiliated with or run by any one newspaper or media organization, IIJNM is able to maintain wider association within the industry.

The program leading to a diploma or a postgraduate diploma in journalism builds on the student's background in liberal arts, the sciences, law or other disciplines. The purpose is not just to train candidates for the next job in the field, but to educate them for significant careers. The motivating factor behind our college is the need to improve the quality of journalism, and elevate the stature of the profession in India.

Diploma Programs in Journalism & New Media:

IIJNM offers the following two programs:

1) Post-graduate diploma in print, broadcast or online/multimedia:
1-year Post-graduate Diploma program in print, broadcast or multimedia journalism. Eligibility criteria for the PG Diploma course: The candidate needs to have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in any discipline. Those in their final year can also apply.

2) Diploma in print, broadcast or online/multimedia:
1-year Diploma program in print, broadcast or multimedia journalism. To apply for this course, candidates need to have completed pre-university or Standard 12 education or be preparing to take their Class 12 exam in the current year.

Both the diploma programs consist of core courses including advanced seminars, electives, media workshops and a master's thesis project. Depending on the type of diploma program, the requirements for graduation vary. These courses are offered in two semesters: July-December and January-June.

Students specialise in one of three areas:

1) Print (Newspaper and Magazine)
2) Broadcast (Television and Radio)
3) Online / Multimedia

Print students are required to cover both areas, with special focus on newspaper or magazine journalism, respectively. Television and Radio students produce both television and radio programs as part of their Broadcast curriculum, with special focus on their area of interest – TV or radio. Online/Multimedia students are required to produce a multimedia website that incorporates all aspects of their study involving print, broadcast, and web - audio, video, slideshows, etc., and also using cell-phones and PDAs to upload material.

Practical Journalism & Media Training:

This is accomplished by covering news at least twice every week in Bangalore city and surrounding rural areas, using advanced media equipment, working with sophisticated editing software for text, image, sound and video, publishing newspapers, magazines, TV and radio programs, and on-line multimedia news presentations. All these are carried out under the guidance of veteran journalist faculty who are complemented by guest lecturers from the media industry.

Students also get the opportunity to intern at media organizations for two weeks to a month. By the time the academic year ends, the graduating class is ready to hit the road running in their chosen fields – an unmatched experience among media education institutions for motivated students.

"After graduating from IIJNM, in 2009 with broadcast media as my major, I entered the radio industry. And then, I shifted to the print media. The best part about IIJNM is that it teaches you to cut across media."
- Dilraz Kunnummal, Reporter, Daily Tribune

"The college taught me how to practice journalism. My greatest learning at IIJNM was that 'Journalism is not a job, it is a way of life'. It has been two years now and there are challenges and tough times every day. But the way of life that IIJNM inculcated in me always helps in sailing through."
