You will also advocate for and aid persons with special needs. This diploma course aims to provide highly-focussed training and experience in counselling skills, social science, life span development, and social work theory and practice. It focuses on addressing family issues, substance abuse, multicultural backgrounds, gender, disability, sexual orientation, etc. You will learn how to help people to promote their rights and meet their responsibilities in ways that empower them.

Students will acquire the necessary abilities to accomplish the following tasks:
- Assess individual, family, group or community needs
- Apply effective communication and interactive skills
- Create and maintain a helping relationship
- Identify and mobilize community resources relevant to client’s need
- Set goals and develop appropriate intervention methods
- Implement strategies to increase client’s problem-solving abilities

Community Service Workers are employed in many areas including government agencies, social services, community services, juvenile residential facilities, addiction treatment centres, mental health agencies, school boards, group homes, correctional facilities and more.
