Senior Architect

For our Berlin office, we are seeking a Senior Architect with experience in project and team management to join our team as soon as possible, working 32–40 hours per week.

De Zwarte Hond Berlin is looking for an experienced architect to help us build up the architecture practice at our Berlin office. Our Berlin team currently consists of 8 colleagues from the fields of urban planning and landscape architecture. With you, the architectural focus at this location is being newly established. We aim to combine the open, pragmatic, and quality-oriented approach of Dutch architecture with the requirements of German planning and construction processes.

In doing so, we work on a wide range of projects—from residential and educational buildings to public and cultural facilities, universities, and mixed-use neighborhoods.

For us, good architecture begins with urban planning and does not end with the design, but rather with a carefully executed building. That is why we are looking for an open-minded, creative, and engaging individual who would like to tackle this challenging task together with us. De Zwarte Hond takes an implementation-oriented approach: from the initial idea to the handover of the keys.

Our buildings derive their identity from their specific context, from sustainable and healthy materials, and from precise details that lend them character and a natural sense of individuality.

• A completed university degree in architecture at the master’s or diploma level, as well as registration with a Chamber of Architects (Architektenkammer)
• At least 7-10 years of professional experience, ideally including several years in a leadership role within larger firms with more than 20 employees
• Strong design skills and in-depth knowledge of structural and construction engineering
• Strength in concept development, implementation planning, and detailed design, as well as a thoughtful approach to materials
• Experience in project management and the technical leadership of interdisciplinary project teams
• In-depth knowledge of German planning, permitting, and construction processes, as well as experience with large-scale and complex projects
• A reflective, critical mindset and a well-defined professional perspective
• Initiative, team spirit, and strong communication skills
• Affinity for urban planning, structural engineering, circular construction, and sustainability
• Very good command of German and good command of English; knowledge of Dutch is a plus
• Very good knowledge of a common CAD or BIM program; experience with Archicad is a plus

As a Senior Architect, you will assume architectural and design responsibility for projects across all relevant planning phases. Your work will be varied—both in terms of scale and level of detail, as well as in terms of the diverse tasks and building typologies. You know how to align your projects with De Zwarte Hond’s overarching mission and philosophy. You serve as a reliable point of contact for our clients and keep a close eye on the entire design and planning process in terms of quality, deadlines, budget, and results.

In addition, you’ll actively help shape the development of the architecture practice at our Berlin office. You’ll join an existing 8-person team of urban planners and landscape architects and help establish architecture as a new discipline within the office. Together with the office management and our colleagues in Groningen, Rotterdam, and Cologne, you’ll develop working methods, quality standards, and structures for the growing team.
