The European Union's bank (EIB) is seeking to recruit for its Legal Directorate (JU) – EU Operations Department (OPS‑EU) – Central Europe Division (CE) at its headquarters in Luxembourg, a Banking and Finance Lawyer – Polish Market Focus

This is a full‑time position at grade 5 for which the EIB offers a permanent contract.

PurposeJoin our team of legal experts at the EIB's Central Europe Division (CE). As a legal counsel, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and negotiating lending operations of the EIB across eight jurisdictions. If you’re passionate about impactful work and thrive in a collaborative environment, you will be at the forefront of legal excellence, supporting lending operations that drive economic growth and cohesion in the region.
You will collaborate with a team of 12 highly skilled lawyers and work closely with EIB's clients, ranging from member states, local municipalities, banks and corporates of all sizes across all eligible sectors. You will offer strategic guidance on all types of lending operations, including secured and non‑secured transactions, structured finance and asset finance. Your legal acumen will guide projects, mitigate risks and ensure compliance.
CE is at the heart of lending operations and financial products in the following eight countries:
Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia and Croatia.
As a Lawyer, you will report directly to the Head of CE Division and cooperate with other lawyers in the Division and the Legal Directorate, as well as colleagues in other Directorates of the EIB.
AccountabilitiesYou will provide legal advice on lending operations in relation to, in particular, the EIB projects in Poland, but opportunities may also arise for you to advise on projects in other jurisdictions covered by the CE team and mentioned above. Your tasks may involve limited travel for negotiations and signature of legal documentation.
Responsibilities include:
- Drafting and independently negotiating legal documentation in English, including loan agreements, guarantees and other related finance documents for lending operations such as bilateral loans with banking sector counterparts, corporates and public sector entities.
- Providing legal advice to the EIB, with assistance from externally chosen legal counsels, in relation to structured finance transactions such as asset‑backed and synthetic securitizations, project finance and PPP.
- Offering legal advice throughout the entire lending process, from initial structuring to post‑financial‑close matters (including workouts and restructurings).
- Liaising with external counsel and supervising their work, when necessary.
- Undertaking research and legal studies on matters of law arising in connection with the Bank’s operations and in the context of developing new products.
- Building and maintaining relationships within the EIB, with its clients and external legal advisers and representing the EIB externally.
- University degree in law, at least equal to a bachelor’s degree.
- Professional legal qualification in any jurisdiction where the CE team operates (preferably in Polish law); lawyers qualified in Luxembourg or English law are also encouraged to apply.
- Admission to a bar association.
- At least 5 years of relevant experience, preferably gained from a law firm advising on lending transactions.
- Significant experience in drafting and negotiating finance documents (of LMA type).
- Experience in structured finance, project finance, or PPP transactions is a distinct advantage.
