Substitute Custodian Position Overview

Under direction of the Chief Custodian, the Substitute Custodian will provide a safe, healthy, and clean building. They will clean, perform minor and preventative maintenance, remove snow, and do grounds work.

• Perform a variety of tasks including sweeping, dry or wet mopping, waxing, buffing, vacuuming, and cleaning walls, ceilings, windows, furniture, lights, and bathrooms.
• Shampoo carpets, move furniture, and clean outside grounds.
• Assist in loading and unloading trucks, shoveling and removing snow and ice, cutting grass, trimming, and securing the alarm system.
• Open and close the building, and check and secure the building at the beginning and end of each shift.
• Clean rooms, hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, offices, stairways, and other areas according to school district standards.
• Sweep, mop, buff, strip, and wax floors; clean rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and blinds.
• Wash walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, and sills; remove graffiti and clean glass areas.
• Set up and break down chairs, tables, and equipment in meeting rooms and functional rooms.
• Clear snow from entrances and walkways, spread sand and ice‑melting chemicals, and perform grounds‑keeping duties to maintain the premises.
• Receive deliveries, assist in unloading trucks, store supplies, and deliver materials to classrooms and other building areas.
• Empty wastebaskets, pick up and remove trash, and assist with the recycling program.

• High School Diploma or GED (preferred).
• Ability to follow oral or written directions.
• Ability to work cooperatively with teachers, students, administrators, co‑workers, and the public.
• Good physical health and strength to perform routine lifting and cleaning duties.

Employees must be able to perform sustained moderate physical effort, move objects up to 50 pounds, stand continuously, and communicate verbally as required. Normal cognitive abilities and the ability to learn, recall, and apply specific skills are also required.

$16.32 per hour—up to 29.5 hours per week. Substitutes are casual seasonal employees and are not eligible for benefits.
