Scientist – Quantum Sensors & Qubit Technology (m/f/d)
The Semiconductor Laboratory (HLL) of the Max Planck Society, located on the research campus in Garching near Munich, is a leading facility for the development of highly precise radiation sensors and detector systems. On approximately 1,400 m² of cleanroom space, HLL develops, fabricates and tests advanced semiconductor detectors for applications in X-ray astronomy, particle physics and materials research. With around 50 employees from different nationalities, HLL provides a highly international and interdisciplinary environment in which scientists, engineers and technology specialists work closely together across the entire development chain - from fundamental research and simulation to device design, fabrication and experimental characterization.
To strengthen our activities in quantum sensing and advanced quantum-device technologies, and to provide scientific and technological support to our research, engineering and service teams, we are looking for a Scientist – Quantum Sensors & Qubit Technology (m/f/d) to join our team at the earliest possible date on a full-time basis (39 hours/week).
Your responsibilities- Develop and optimize quantum sensor concepts based on qubit systems and quantum effects.
- Perform advanced numerical simulations and modeling of qubit-based sensing systems, including relevant physical processes, noise sources and system-level performance.
- Work closely with technology development, engineering and experimental teams to translate simulation results into practical implementations.
- Analyze experimental data and use the results to refine physical models and sensor designs.
- Contribute to scientific publications, technical documentation and intellectual property.
- PhD in physics, electrical engineering, applied physics, quantum engineering or a related field.
- Background in quantum sensing, qubit control and precision measurement.
- Experience with numerical simulation, modeling and system design.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills combined with a practical, technology-oriented mindset.
- Strong motivation to work in close cooperation with technology, engineering and experimental teams.
- Fluency in English; knowledge of German is an advantage.
- Experience in one or more of the following areas would be particularly valuable:
- Cleanroom / semiconductor / microfabrication experience
- Familiarity with Python, MATLAB, COMSOL or equivalent
- MEMS/NEMS or integrated sensor technologies
- Precision measurement and low-noise instrumentation
- Experience bridging qubit physics, device design and fabrication technology
- International environment, diverse responsibilities and a high degree of autonomy:
Flat hierarchies and a collaborative, agile team within an internationally renowned research institution. You will work closely with scientists, engineers and technology specialists across disciplines and have the opportunity to shape the development of innovative quantum-sensing technologies. - Advantages of the public sector:
Remuneration according to the German public service pay scale TVöD (Bund), depending on qualifications and experience; occupational pension scheme (VBL); 30 days of annual leave (31 days as of 2027), plus additional days off on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. The position is initially limited to two years, with the possibility of subsequent permanent employment. - Work-life balance and compatibility of family and career:
Flexible working hours (flextime), opportunities for mobile working, support in finding childcare and care for family members, and a comprehensive company health management program. - Professional development:
Thorough onboarding and opportunities for internal and external…
