PhD Position - Quantum Computing for Power Systems Security

At the Institute of Climate and Energy Systems Engineering (ICE-1), we develop advanced models, algorithms, and control solutions for simulating, optimizing, and operating future integrated energy systems. We address the challenges arising from the increasing integration of renewable energy, sector coupling, decentralization, and growing energy infrastructure complexity. The Control Solutions department develops methods and algorithms for controlling energy systems and their components.

We focus on application-oriented methods that can operate in real time and are suitable for operating decentralized systems. We aim to enable the reliable, cost-efficient, resilient, and sustainable operation of future energy networks by combining our knowledge of energy systems with cutting‑edge developments in machine learning, generative AI, and digital infrastructures.

Your Job

The increasing complexity of future power systems, driven by renewable energy integration, power electronics, and distributed energy resources, requires computational methods capable of solving security assessment and optimization problems at unprecedented speed and scale. While high-performance computing (HPC) has become the backbone of large-scale power system simulation, emerging quantum computing technologies have the potential to further accelerate selected computational tasks. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of quantum computing based solutions for next‑generation power system security applications.

We are currently seeking a Ph.D. student to research the following topics:

  • Investigation of quantum computing methods for contingency analysis, optimization, and dynamic security assessment
  • Development of hybrid quantum–classical algorithms for power system security assessment and operation
  • Integration of quantum algorithms with large‑scale HPC simulation frameworks developed at ICE‑1
  • Benchmarking and performance evaluation of quantum, classical, and hybrid approaches using realistic transmission and distribution system models
  • Development of scalable workflows exploiting state‑of‑the‑art HPC infrastructures and emerging quantum computing platforms
  • Collaboration with leading national and international partners in the fields of quantum computing, scientific computing, and energy systems
Your Profile
  • Excellent university degree (Master’s) in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related discipline
  • Strong motivation for interdisciplinary research at the interface of energy systems, high-performance computing, and quantum computing
  • Strong background in mathematics, optimization, numerical methods, or scientific computing
  • Excellent programming skills (e.g., Python, C/C++, Julia, or MATLAB)
  • Interest in quantum computing, quantum algorithms, and hybrid quantum–classical computing. Previous experience is considered an advantage but is not required
  • Knowledge of power systems, optimization or high-performance computing is highly desirable
  • Experience with quantum software frameworks (e.g., Qiskit, Penny Lane, Cirq) or HPC programming (MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, GPU computing) is considered an advantage but is not required
  • Motivation to conduct excellent scientific research and publish in leading international journals and conferences
  • Very good command of written and spoken English with extensive vocabulary is required(at least B2 level according to the CEFR), ideally supported by a certificate confirming the language level
  • Prior German knowledge is not required
