Munich Re Specialty was formed as a stand-alone division in 2023, and brings together the wider Munich Re group's primary specialty business units. Complementing an already strong presence in the UK and the US, Munich Re Specialty - Global Markets (MRSGM) has been tasked with executing a wider plan to build a broader European footprint.

In order to successfully establish and profitably grow our Property business in the German market, we are looking for a Senior Property UW, Germany to join our team.

We are searching for an exceptional individual with a proven track-record of growth and profitable underwriting in Construction & Engineering LoB in the German market. Ideally, our successful candidate has experience across both Retail (non-Wholesale) and Wholesale business - having underwritten business regionally in Germany. Knowledge of Lloyd's of London UW practices would be a benefit. An entrepreneurial spirit is a must, with a high degree of comfort in building a business presence from scratch and preparedness to roll up the sleeves for tasks both big and small.

Responsibilities:

• Lead the underwriting process for Construction & Engineering insurance (All Risk Physical Damage and Third Party Liability cover), assessing risks and determining appropriate coverage and pricing.
• Review, analyse, and evaluate Construction & Engineering risks, ideally including Third Party Liability and Professional Liability
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers, clients, and internal teams to ensure the seamless delivery of underwriting services.
• Provide expert advice on complex underwriting matters and assist junior underwriters in the development of underwriting skills and expertise.
• Monitor and evaluate policy performance, identifying opportunities for risk mitigation and recommending necessary changes to terms and conditions.
• Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and company guidelines related to property underwriting.
• Stay informed of industry trends, market conditions, and emerging risks to ensure underwriting strategies are aligned with market demands.
• Participate in the development of underwriting policies, guidelines, and pricing models.
• Contribute to business growth by actively identifying opportunities to expand Construction & Engineering business in alignment with company objectives.
• Conduct and develop effective relationships with insureds and brokers, to both strengthen existing trading relationships and secure new business that falls within the Underwriting business plan.
• Direct and manage overall technical underwriting for Construction & Engineering activities for MRSGM in Germany while assuring that a high level of technical proficiency is achieved in all areas.

Knowledge and Skills

• Deep understanding of Construction & Engineering insurance products, risk assessment, pricing, and underwriting guidelines.

• Proven experience underwriting complex Construction & Engineering risks, ideally including Third Party Liability and Professional Liability

• Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• In-depth knowledge of exposure and experience rating processes to assess risk and ensure accurate pricing.
• Excellent people skills with the ability to build and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a strong commitment to the company's corporate mission.
• Exceptional negotiation skills to secure favourable terms for both clients and the company.
• Strong analytical skills and attention to detail with the ability to make sound underwriting decisions.
• Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills, with the ability to interact with all levels of the organization.
• A proven track record in general business management, including strategic planning, forecasting, and long-term growth.
• Fluency in both German and English.
• Extensive primary insurance underwriting experience
• University degree and/or relevant professional qualification
