Software Engineering Manager

We are supporting a rapidly growing quantum technology company developing next-generation quantum computing systems based on neutral-atom architectures. They are looking for a Software Engineering Manager – Control Systems to lead a talented engineering team responsible for developing the software infrastructure that enables reliable operation of advanced quantum hardware.

This role sits at the intersection of software engineering, experimental hardware, and quantum technology. You will lead a growing team of engineers, ensuring technical excellence, strong delivery, and individual development while working closely with hardware, physics, and leadership teams to translate ambitious technical goals into scalable solutions.

• Lead, mentor, and support a growing team of software engineers, including conducting 1:1s, career development discussions, performance reviews, and supporting recruitment activities.
• Drive the development and delivery of control system software, ensuring strong engineering standards across architecture, testing, documentation, and code quality.
• Manage technical planning, prioritisation, and execution while aligning engineering goals with wider product and company objectives.
• Collaborate closely with hardware, physics, and experimental teams to integrate software with advanced quantum systems and resolve technical challenges.
• Guide architectural decisions, facilitate design discussions, and promote effective engineering practices.
• Communicate project progress, risks, and resource requirements to senior leadership.
• Support R&D initiatives, technical proposals, and funding applications where required.
• Build a collaborative engineering culture focused on ownership, innovation, and continuous improvement.

• 3–5+ years of experience in engineering leadership, management, or technical team coordination.
• Strong software engineering background with experience across areas such as:
  • Embedded systems
  • Control software
  • Software architecture
  • Distributed systems
  • Hardware-integrated software development
• Experience developing or managing systems involving hardware-in-the-loop testing and experimental integration.
• Experience working alongside optics, photonics, physics, or laboratory-based engineering teams.
• Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
• Experience working within structured engineering processes, including agile methodologies.
