The Sample Environment and Characterization group operates state‑of‑the‑art user laboratories for sample preparation and characterization. The laboratories are equipped with a wide range of advanced characterization devices such as electron microscopes, an X‑ray diffractometer, and a photoelectron spectrometer.

Specifically, for operating and further developing the electron spectrometer lab, we’re searching for a

• Develop and operate our photoelectron spectroscopy setup using a spherical analyser
• Angular resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES)
• Photo electron emission microscopy (PEEM)
• Support internal and external users of the European XFEL in sample preparation and characterization techniques
• Scanning electron microscopy
• Focused ion beam milling and deposition
• Optical microscopy and other lab‑based sample characterization methods
• Collaborate in scientific projects involving sample characterization
• Occasionally participate in shift work in order to facilitate user experiments.

• PhD or equivalent degree in Physics or Chemistry, or in a related field
• Expert in photoelectron spectroscopy
• Experience in electron microscopy
• Willingness to perform shift work
• Motivation to work in a diverse, international team of scientists, engineers and technicians
