Python Backend Engineer

The Unit is a software development company with HQ in Ireland, focused on Sports betting, Gambling & iGaming industries. Our team has collaborated with customers from across the globe since 2017. We are currently seeking a dedicated Python Backend Engineer to join our team.

• Design and develop backend services, APIs, and internal integrations using Python.
• Build and maintain data processing pipelines for incoming files, API streams, and transactional data.
• Develop and optimize microservices involving FastAPI, Celery workers, background tasks, and distributed workflows.
• Integrate with 3rd-party providers using REST APIs, webhooks, and event-driven patterns.
• Implement messaging-based communication using Kafka, Rabbit
  
  MQ, or Redis Streams.
• Work with relational and No
  
  SQL databases (Postgre
  
  SQL, Redis, Mongo
  
  DB) including schema design, migrations, and performance optimization.
• Collaborate with Dev Ops on containerization, deployments, and cloud infrastructure.
• Ensure high code quality through tests, code reviews, logging, and monitoring.
• Participate in architecture discussions to improve scalability, reliability, and observability of backend services.

• 3–5+ years of professional Python experience.
• Strong expertise with FastAPI or similar frameworks.
• Solid experience building microservices
  , distributed systems, or event-driven backends.
• Experience with Celery
  , background workers, or asynchronous task processing.
• Strong understanding of REST APIs
  , authentication flows, and integrations with external providers.
• Hands‑on experience with PostgreSQL (queries, indexing, optimization) and Redis
  .
• Familiarity with Kafka
  , RabbitMQ
  , or other message brokers.
• Experience with Docker
  , container‑based development, and local multi‑service setups.
• Knowledge of automated testing (pytest), code quality, and best practices.
• Ability to troubleshoot complex systems and communicate solutions clearly.

• Understanding of Airflow / Prefect or other workflow orchestration tools.
• Experience with ETL/ELT pipelines

• Background in high‑throughput systems, fintech, payment processing, or iGaming.
