n8n is hiring a remote Senior Engineer I-II for its Core Workflow Engine.

Role Overview

You will build and evolve the core platform foundations that power n8n’s workflow engine and frontend platform, enabling product engineers to ship confidently across cloud and self-hosted deployments.

Responsibilities
  • Design and develop backend subsystems for durable workflow execution, state management, orchestration patterns, and queue/task distribution.
  • Apply best practices for correctness and resilience, including failure modes, idempotency, and state handling.
  • Improve data architecture, database performance, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Build and improve the core canvas architecture and frontend platform primitives that enable complex workflow building experiences.
  • Develop real-time collaboration capabilities with a focus on correctness and user experience.
  • Contribute to performance and rendering improvements using web workers and rendering optimization techniques.
  • Participate in technical decision-making through clear proposals and discussions.
  • Collaborate across teams to ensure smooth integration of platform changes.
  • Support peers through code reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing.
Requirements
  • Systems thinking mindset: focus on correctness, trade-offs, and reliability.
  • System design experience: ability to explain technical choices clearly.
  • Strong Type Script experience and comfort with large, evolving codebases.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Pragmatic engineering mindset: willingness to improve and refactor existing systems.
  • For backend‑focused candidates:
    • Experience building Node.js backend systems beyond CRUD.
    • Understanding of event‑driven patterns, idempotency, and distributed system reliability.
    • Experience with data‑intensive services, performance, and operational concerns.
  • For frontend‑focused candidates:
    • Experience building architecture‑heavy frontend products such as canvas or real‑time collaborative apps.
    • Performance optimization skills for rendering and runtime behavior.
    • Strong Type Script frontend skills;
      Vue experience is preferred but not required.
Nice‑to‑Haves
  • Experience with workflow engines, orchestration platforms, or developer tools.
  • Open‑source contributions and understanding of public API contracts.
  • Experience with large‑scale SaaS systems.
  • Experience with monolith‑to‑modular migrations.
  • Knowledge of durable execution patterns such as queues, retries, or sagas.
  • Experience with collaborative or real‑time frontend applications.
  • Knowledge of plugin systems, micro‑frontends, or web workers.
  • Exposure to both cloud and self‑hosted environments.
  • Observability mindset: instrumentation, debugging, rollout safety.
