Spanish Immersion Summer Camp in Costa Rica

ISLS - Spanish Institute:
The Institute for Spanish Language Studies was founded in 1992 as a family business to promote the study of Spanish in Costa Rica. Over the years we expanded and developed a number of different specialty Spanish Programs. This lead directly to us introducing our Teen Spanish Camps in 2002. Later we added a Children's Camp in 2005 and eventually an all inclusive Family Camp in 2008. Our unique Spanish Summer Camps in Costa Rica are held in Playa Tamarindo & Turrialba. They combine Spanish with: Volunteer, Service, Adventure Tours and Surfing. The Children's Camp is for 2 to 13 year olds and the Teen camps are for 13 to 17 year olds. So, with our Adult Spanish Programs, every member of the family can participate. It is a fantastic way for a family to spend their vacation in a true safe and Tropical location.

Spanish Program Information:

Students can attend all of our Spanish camps with any level of Spanish ability. They are then placed into small groups of students at the same level. Our classes are small and personal with professional teachers and no more than 6 students in a level. Every student on each of our youth camps will receive a certificate of completion for their time in our program.

Classes are conducted totally in Spanish, causing students to have to think in the language right from the start. Our material is especially designed for our students to make the language come alive. There are visits outside the classroom with teachers to markets, fruit stands, the beach and into town. By having to hear and speak the language on a daily basis, students are forced to use the Spanish they are learning in the classroom in everyday situations. Learning Spanish in a country were it is spoken is the very best way to learn the language.

Accommodation for Teens:

Image of Spanish Immersion Summer Camp in Costa RicaThe Spanish, Service and Turtle Rescue Camp is located primarily in the mountain valley town of Turrialba. In this town we have many local host families who work with our Spanish school. Many of them have been chosen to work with our teen camps in the summer. Each family is specially chosen and has gone through rigorous evaluation and training. We house students one or two to a family. Each student will have their own bed and will have both breakfast and dinner with their families. All host families are located in the same part of town, so that students will never be far from each other or the camp counselors.

For the Tamarindo Spanish Camp we have two options. Students can choose to stay with a local family or they can stay at the on-campus student residence. This dorm-type set up has male and female bunk rooms and is located right on the beach, so it is very convenient to the activities of the camp. There is 24 hour supervision and chaperones stay in the residence in their own rooms.

Children's Spanish and Adventure Camp:

Photos of ISLS - Spanish InstituteOur Children’s Spanish Camp is a unique opportunity for families with children of all ages who want an educational and fun vacation. We are located on a beautiful and sunny tropical beach with a multitude of activities and tours. We have exciting Camp Option for all ages with numerous start dates throughout the summer.

We have five age groups: 2 to 4, 5 to 7, 8 to 10, 10 to 13 and 13 to 17. The four and under group will be essentially a Spanish daycare option that can be done 2, 4 or 6 hours each day, Monday through Friday. For all other groups, they will be separated into age appropriate Spanish classes for two to four hours each day. For 10 and 13-year olds they have the option of moving up or down age groups, depending upon maturity and language ability.  Activities such as Spanish classes and tours are age and developmentally appropriate.

The Children’s Spanish Camp runs Monday through Friday, from 8am to 2pm, even no National Holidays. We will have a surf lesson each week, an adventure tour and a cultural exchange, in addition to games, classes, art, beach time and lunch. Each week, tours and activities will be rotated in order to give our students the widest possible range of experiences in Costa Rica. Tour options include an Estuary Tour, Zip Lining Tour, Sailboat Tour, Farm Tour, and the Playa Conchal Beach Tour.

Picture of Spanish Immersion Summer Camp in Costa RicaISLS was one of the most unique and wonderful experiences of my life. It combined the fun and freedom of a perfect tropical vacation with the chance to not only be taught but emerged in the Spanish language and culture. The teachers were fun and funny, it was a rare time when I actually enjoyed going to classes! Looking back, I can’t believe how many different fun activities were fit into the short two weeks: zip-lining through the rainforest, snorkeling, hiking to waterfalls, surfing, white water rafting, and wandering through the little town watching the sunset that never failed too resemble the nicest of postcard pictures…I never wanted to leave. I came out of this program with fun memories, a better understanding of Spanish, and a whole new group of friends; it was an experience I will remember for the rest of my life.

This trip was one of the best experiences of my entire life. I went into the experience by myself and was a nervous wreck. I came out of experience more confident than I have ever had in my life. Not only did I learn to surf and experience all sorts of fun things like zip swinging through the rainforest... but I skipped a grade level of Spanish in school and made great friends.
The trip was well organized, the group leaders were great and enthusiastic. I highly recommend it.
