Consular Services to Australian citizens and permanent residents living in and travelling through or the United States are provided by the Embassy and by the Consulates-General in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Honolulu and San Francisco.
The Embassy can provide consular assistance to Australian citizens and permanent residents travelling or living abroad through our offices in Australia and diplomatic missions (embassies, high commissions, consulates) overseas. Their capacity to assist their citizens is influenced by local laws and conditions, international rules governing consular work, and by the cooperation offered by persons and organisations outside the Australian Government.
The Embassy role includes:
- providing one with prompt, effective and courteous consular service
- ensuring that thy have trained and dedicated staff to assist their citizens
- advising the applicants of the services they can and cannot provide and the fees and charges that apply
- protecting the applicants privacy in accordance with Australian law
- maintaining collaborative working relations with other government and non-government agencies to facilitate effective consular and crisis-related assistance.

Likewise, consular staff is unable to assist Australians with United States visa, immigration or citizenship matters. If one has any questions regarding United States visa, immigration or citizenship matters, he/she should contact the United States Embassy or one of the United States Consulates-General in Australia prior to the departure.
The Embassy does not issue birth, death or marriage certificates. If a person wishes to register a birth, death or marriage, or obtain a copy of their existing Australian birth, death or marriage certificate, he/she may apply through the official web site of the relevant State or Territory Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
Australian citizens travelling or living abroad are encouraged to register with the Embassy or the nearest Consulate. The registration information one provides will help the Embassy to contact or find their citizens in an emergency - whether it is a natural disaster, civil disturbance or family emergency. It may also be used to pass other information to you such as important travel advice updates, notice of elections and information on other matters relevant to travellers and expatriates
