The Fiji High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa was officially opened on 29th July 2011 by Fiji's Prime Minister, Commodore Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama. The establishment of the mission in South Africa reflects the decision by the Government of the Republic of Fiji to expand its Look North policy and seek to develop diplomatic relations with other countries outside those of its traditional friends. The Fiji High Commissioner, HE Mr Beniamino Salacakau, presented his credentials to President Jacob Zuma on 1st February 2012. He is also accredited to the Republic of Angola and the Republic of Botswana and it is anticipated that accreditations to other neighboring countries in the region will be made in due course.    

What the High Commission Can Do:

  • Issue emergency travel documents.
  • Provide assistance in the case of an accident, serious illness, or death to arrange for next of kin to be informed.
  • Provide a list of doctors and lawyers.
  • Visit you in jail, if you are arrested, if you so request and arrange for your family to be informed, if you wish.
  • Help you during emergencies, such as natural disasters.

When applying for a passport please note that the total period of validity of a Fiji Passport is ten years from the original date of issue. It is the responsibility of all passport holders to renew their passport prior to expiry. Applications for all Fiji Passports are processed by the Immigration Department in Suva, Fiji. Please note that the Fiji High Commission in Pretoria or any of the Fiji Missions abroad currently do not accept or issue passport applications.

Passports are issued by the Immigration Department Headquarters, Suva, Fiji during office hours. Completed application should reach the Immigration Department not less than 14 days before the date of which the passport is required.

Fees can be paid by International Money Order or International Bank Draft payable in Fijian dollars for the prescribed fees can be obtained from your local bank.

Fiji citizens residing in South Africa and the African region should register with the High Commission. Through registration, the High Commission can more accurately gauge the number and location of Fiji citizens in the event that an emergency situation necessitates the rapid dissemination of vital information.

Fiji citizens traveling in South Africa and the African region should be aware that the High Commission can only provide a very basic safety net for travellers in difficulty. Travellers need to be aware that Fiji citizens who enter a foreign state become subject to its laws and are legally accountable for acts they commit on its territory. In the event of a Fiji citizen finding him or herself in difficulty, Fiji High Commission Officers will seek to ensure that Fiji citizens receive the benefit of the same laws, administration, protection and means of redress which the foreign state affords its own subjects.
