Diplomatic relations between Slovakia and Norway were established in January 1993, when Slovakia became an independent republic. The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Bratislava officially opened in September 2004. Slovakia became member of NATO 2nd of April in 2004. 1st May 2004 Slovakia became EU-members, and thus a partner of Norway in the EU internal market through the EEA agreement.

The Norwegian state visit to Slovakia in October 2010 contributed to stronger bilateral cooperation and increased attention on Norwegian business and culture in Slovakia. Trade between Norway and Slovakia is however rather limited. Although Norwegian investment in Slovakia has increased over the past years, the amount of Norwegian investment is still modest.

Norwegian authorities demand either passport (valid at least 3 months after the planned return) or an officially accepted identity card from citizens of the Slovak Republic travelling to Norway. For this purpose the Slovak Identification Card (“Občiansky preukaz”) is an accepted travel document. Slovak citizens do not need a residence permit when they stay in Norway up to 3 months.

The applicant must arrive at the diplomatic or consular mission with all documents at the agreed time. If you do not have everything with you, you might have to book a new appointment for submitting your application and the documents. Incomplete applications could be rejected. The diplomatic or consular mission will notify you once your application has been processed.

Theft or loss of a valid passport must be reported to the police and a police report should be presented when applying for a new passport. Otherwise a passport is applied as normally. When reporting a lost passport to the police it should be noted that a report made by telephone and a registration number given on the basis of that might not be adequate proof to the insurance company. The report can be made in person at a police station so that a report of the crime is available in writing.
