Work Visa for  Australia
There are quite a number of employment visa options for Australia depending on the work you want to do, and some of the most popular work visas and temporary working holiday visas are outlined below. If you have skills or qualifications that Australia needs, you can be sponsored by an employer or invited to apply for a visa by the Australian Government. You may also apply for a visa if you want to

  • make short business visits
  • establish or manage a new or existing business
  • invest in Australia
  • participate in a short professional, cultural or social activity in Australia

The first steps when applying for a working visa for Australia:

  • The first step involves determining the category of work visa based upon the job offer.
  • The applicant must satisfy the requirements of a points-based assessment, if applicable.
  • The employer must complete an online nomination/sponsorship form, if applicable, before the individual can apply for the visa.
  • The applicant must fill out the online application form of the particular visa category.
  • Any relevant information and supplementary documents must be submitted along with the application.
  • A visa application fee may have to be paid in order for the visa to be processed.

Standard documentation required:

  • Passport (with a minimum of 6 months validity)
  • 2-3 recent photographs.
  • Job offer letter.
  • Proof of dependents, if applicable.
  • Health and travel insurance.
  • Good conduct documentation.
  • Personal Character Assessment (Form 80).
  • Curriculum vitae, Mark-sheets and certificates.
  • English Language competency.

Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417)
For young people who want to holiday and work in Australia for up to a year. It is a temporary visa that encourages cultural exchange and closer ties between Australia and eligible countries.

Requirements
You can apply for this visa if you:

  • are at least 18 but not yet 31 years of age
  • do not have a dependent child accompanying you at any time during your stay in Australia
  • have a passport from an eligible country.

First Working Holiday visa: You must be outside Australia when you apply for your first Working Holiday visa and when the visa is decided.

Second Working Holiday visa: If you apply in Australia, you must be in Australia when the visa is granted. If you apply outside Australia, you must be outside Australia when the visa is granted.

Work and Holiday Visa (subclass 462)
The Work and Holiday (Temporary) visa is for young people who want to holiday and work in Australia for up to a year. It is a temporary visa that encourages cultural exchange and closer ties between Australia and eligible countries.

Requirements
You can apply for this visa if you:

  • are at least 18 but not yet 31 years of age
  • don't have a dependent child with you at any time during your stay in Australia
  • have a passport from one of these countries:
  • Argentina
  • Bangladesh
  • Chile
  • Indonesia
  • Malaysia
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Spain
  • Thailand
  • Turkey
  • USA
  • Uruguay

Note: Only USA passport holders can apply online

Skilled—Recognised Graduate Visa (subclass 476)
Allows recent engineering graduates of recognised universities and institutions to gain up to 18 months of skilled work experience in occupations. It is a temporary visa.

Requirements
You might be able to get this visa if you:

  • are younger than 31 years of age
  • have completed an engineering degree at a recognised institution in the past two years.

You may be inside or outside Australia when you apply for this visa however you must be outside of Australia when the visa is decided, unless you are a New Zealand citizen who holds a Special Category visa (subclass 444). A New Zealand citizen who holds a Special Category visa (subclass 444) can be in or outside Australia when the visa is decided.

Temporary Work (Skilled) Visa (subclass 457)
Permits skilled workers to travel to Australia to work in their nominated occupation for their approved sponsor for up to four years. ​​

Requirements
A business can sponsor someone for this visa if they cannot find an Australian citizen or permanent resident to do the skilled work. You can be in or outside of Australia when you lodge your application. 

You might be able to get this visa if you:

  • have been sponsored by an approved business
  • have the required skills to fill a position nominated by an approved business
  • meet the skills, qualifications and English language requirements
  • meet various health requirements, including having health insurance. In addition, employees must meet character requirements through background checks.

Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186)
A permanent residence visa for skilled workers. It allows you to work in Australia under one of three streams:

  • the Temporary Residence Transition stream
  • the Direct Entry stream
  • the Agreement stream

Requirements
You might be able to get this visa if you:

  • have been nominated by an approved Australian employer
  • are younger than 50 years of age, unless you are exempt
  • meet the skills, qualifications and English language requirements, unless you are exempt
  • apply under the stream for which you were nominated

Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189)

A permanent residence visa for points-tested skilled workers who want to work and live in Australia, and who are not sponsored by an employer or family member or nominated by a state or territory government.

Requirements
To be able to apply for this visa you need to submit an expression of interest and then be invited through SkillSelect to apply. You can be in or outside Australia when you apply and when the visa is granted. If you are in Australia, you must hold a substantive visa or a bridging visa A, B or C.

You might be eligible to apply for this visa if invited. When we sent your letter of invitation, you must also have:

  • nominated an occupation that is on the relevant skilled occupation list
  • obtained a suitable skills assessment for that occupation
  • not yet turned 50 years of age
  • achieved the score specified in your letter of invitation based on the factors in the points test
  • at least competent English.

Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190)
This permanent residence visa is for points-tested skilled workers who are nominated by a state or territory government agency. It allows you to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident.

Requirements
To be able to apply for this visa you need to submit an expression of interest and then be invited through SkillSelect to apply.You can be in or outside Australia when you apply and when the visa is granted. 

You might be eligible to apply for this visa if you were invited. When we sent you your letter of invitation, you must also have:

  • nominated an occupation that is on the relevant skilled occupation list
  • obtained a suitable skills assessment for that occupation
  • not yet turned 50 years of age
  • achieved the score specified in your letter of invitation based on the factors in the points test
  • at least competent English
  • been nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency.
