Job Purprose

Join National Grid as a Transmission Engineer within our Asset Engineering Assurance HV Plant Team as an LVAC & Aux Eqpt specialist. In this pivotal role, you will spearhead engineering design assurance for transmission substation LV supplies and associated systems across a variety of customer projects, ensuring that our assets are primed for decades of reliable operation and maintenance. As a key signatory for system design specifications, you will provide technical assurance and subject matter expertise for substation auxiliary supplies, including LV AC switch gear, distribution systems, DC systems, backup battery systems, and standby generators.

You will be at the forefront of our National Grid Electricity Transmission's Asset Management department, contributing to facilitate the clean energy transition with our commitment to Net Zero the ambitious Great Grid Upgrade.

What you'll do

As an Asset Engineering Assurance Transmission Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

  • Resolving complex LVAC & Aux Eqpt engineering assurance challenges and advising project managers, operations teams, consultants, and development teams.
  • Ensuring compliance with National Grid's technical documentation and safeguarding project specifications. This includes, but isn't limited to, understanding BP500, Design Management (BP188), and various NG Technical Specifications such as TS2 Substation Design.
  • Leading design assurance activities, reviewing supplier designs for adherence to our National Grid Electricity Transmission specifications.
  • Mitigating risks associated with construction and commissioning through high-quality designs. An ideal candidate would be familiar with and possess a solid understanding of Construction Design Management 2015.
  • Making informed, risk-based decisions supported by independent technical knowledge.
  • Collaborating with colleagues to implement changes to NGET technical procedures.
  • Ensuring new equipment meets acceptance criteria for operation and maintenance. Ensuring compliance to National Grid's Type Registration process (BP183)
  • Mentoring junior team members and supporting their professional development towards BP141 authorisation.
About you

We are looking for candidates who possess:

  • Significant experience in the specification, design, development, and management of LV switchboards, DC systems, and backup generation equipment.
  • A STEM degree or equivalent (Electrical or Mechanical Engineering preferred).
  • Demonstrable knowledge of project-based engineering.
  • Strong understanding of asset management principles.
  • Working knowledge of relevant national and international standards and CDM Regulations.
  • Understanding relevant requirements of UK health and safety legislation. Additionally, possess H&S qualifications such as IOSH and/or NEBOSH.
  • Understanding general requirements of UK Environmental and Waste Management legislation
  • Strong experience in managing multiple stakeholders and projects.
  • Understanding of regulatory and energy industry frameworks.
  • Membership in an engineering professional body (e.g., IET) with a desire to achieve chartered engineer status.
  • Desirable: IAM certificate.
  • Desirable: BP141 authorisation as a Substation HV Design Engineer (Assurance)
