Position Overview

Receiving Associates work as part of a team to unload merchandise from carriers and check the quantity and quality of merchandise. They perform Rough Goods Receipt/Detailed Goods Receipt (RGR/DGR) and enter information about incoming merchandise into the store’s system using tools such as First Phone. All Receiving Associates must be certified to use powered lift equipment (pallet jack, reach truck, order puller, forklift).

They may also be required to pick orders when assigned, using the Order Fulfillment Application.

Key Responsibilities Receiving Merchandise
  • Understand carrier unload processes for efficient freight management.
  • Strictly follow receiving standards that are in place.
  • Clean and maintain the receiving area (remove pallets and cardboard, use compactor and bailer, keep area clear for new merchandise).
  • Unload merchandise using designated equipment.
  • Receive all types of inbound freight including BOSS and special orders.
  • Identify and read vendor packing slips, carrier shipping documents, UPC labels and other receiving documents, and compare them to purchase orders to ensure accuracy.
  • Schedule deliveries and pre‑post information into the receiving system.
  • Count carton freight and RGR merchandise to satisfy the freight bill.
  • Identify damaged merchandise and take appropriate action.
Handling Merchandise
  • Stock merchandise onto shelves to achieve 100% in stock.
  • Use appropriate safety procedures when organizing merchandise.
  • Merchandise new items as directed.
  • Build end caps and promotions.
  • Break down and dispose of trash by end of shift.
  • Maintain safe and organized overheads (e.g., striping overheads).
  • Communicate with other Freight Team members to ensure all product is stocked in the proper place.
  • Communicate in‑stock level of merchandise with the Fulfillment Team.
Determining and Meeting Customers Needs
  • Demonstrate GET behaviors consistently throughout each shift.
  • Approach and greet customers.
  • Ask open‑ended questions and express interest in projects to put the customer at ease, determine customer’s level of expertise and needs.

Physical Requirements
  • Bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, lifting, pushing, pulling and moving items frequently; ability to lift and move heavy and bulky items without assistance.
  • Responding to public address system announcements; listen for customer service calls, personal pages and general information announcements.
  • Walking and Standing; moving around the store to assist customers.
  • Identifying and reading reports, tickets and UPC labels; recognize, identify, and use merchandise and necessary reports.
  • Climbing ladders; climb up to 12–16 feet to obtain or stock merchandise.
Working Conditions
  • Due to forklifts and other heavy equipment traveling through the store, temporary cracks may appear in the floor, causing an uneven walking surface.
  • The warehouse environment can be dusty and noisy.
  • Doors are frequently open, causing drafts and interior temperature changes.
  • Floors around work area may become slippery during wet weather conditions.
  • May have to handle merchandise and work with tools with sharp edges.
  • Tools, supplies and related merchandise may contain hazardous material.
Minimum Education

High School Diploma or equivalent
