Job Description & How to Apply Below
Talna Hospice Care is a Medicare-certified hospice based in Murrieta, California. Since 2018 we’ve cared for patients and families across Murrieta, Temecula, Menifee, Wildomar, Lake Elsinore, and the rest of southwest Riverside County. We provide all four levels of hospice care, at home, in assisted living and skilled nursing communities, and in hospitals, through a team of physicians, nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers.
Our care is guided by compassion, connection, and dignity. Strong finances are what let us keep that promise. When the books are right, the cost report is clean, and cash is steady, our clinical team can stay focused on patients and families.
About the RoleWe’re hiring a Controller to lead Talna’s finance and accounting function. This is the senior finance role in the agency. You’ll own the close, the financial statements, internal controls, audits, and the hospice-specific reporting that keeps us compliant with Medicare, and you’ll give leadership the numbers and insight they need to make good decisions.
You’ll lead our Accounting Manager and Bookkeeper, partner closely with our Administrator, billing team, and outside CPA, and report directly to the Administrator and ownership. Your work shapes how the agency grows.
If you’ve led finance in hospice, you already speak the language: per-diem reimbursement by level of care, the aggregate and inpatient caps, the hospice cost report, room and board pass-through, and Medicare reviews. If your background is in home health, skilled nursing, or another Medicare-reimbursed setting, much of what you know carries over, and we’ll support you on the hospice-specific pieces.

- Fully remote from anywhere in the U.S.
- Competitive pay, discretionary bonuses, profit-sharing, and a full benefits package
- A chance to build: strengthen controls, improve reporting, and shape the finance function as we grow
- Work that matters. Every number you protect supports care for people at the end of life and the families who love them
- Lead, coach, and develop the accounting team, including the Accounting Manager and Bookkeeper
- Set priorities, deadlines, and standards for the finance function and hold the team to them
- Serve as the primary finance partner to the Administrator and ownership
- Build and document accounting policies, procedures, and a reliable close calendar
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close and deliver accurate GAAP financial statements on schedule
- Review and approve journal entries, accruals, and balance sheet reconciliations
- Produce a monthly financial package for leadership with clear commentary on results and trends
- Report revenue, cost, and margin by level of care: routine home care, continuous home care, general inpatient, and respite
- Track key hospice metrics such as average daily census, length of stay, cost per patient day, and days sales outstanding (DSO)
- Monitor the Medicare hospice aggregate cap and inpatient cap throughout the year, forecast exposure, and plan accruals and repayments
- Own preparation of the annual Medicare Hospice Cost Report with our outside accountant, including the supporting statistics and work papers
- Oversee accounting for room and board pass-through payments to skilled nursing and long-term care facilities
- Support financial documentation for Medicare reviews and audits, including ADRs, TPE, and UPIC or RAC requests
- Ensure remittances and any records containing protected health information (PHI) are handled in line with HIPAA and Talna’s privacy policies
