Role Description
We’re looking for a Tax Manager to lead our tax practice’s day-to-day delivery and serve as the go-to technical expert for our clients and team. You’ll oversee business and individual tax compliance, review returns prepared by our team, and work alongside our accounting and advisory staff to deliver proactive tax planning for small business owners and law firm clients.
Key responsibilities:
- Review and sign off on business (1065, 1120-S, 1120) and individual (1040) returns for accuracy, completeness, and compliance
- Manage the tax calendar, deadlines, and extensions, keeping work moving through our workflow system so nothing slips
- Provide tax planning and projections for clients, including entity structure, estimated payments, and year-end strategy
- Coach, train, and review the work of tax preparers, giving clear, constructive feedback
- Respond to IRS and state notices and correspondence on behalf of clients
- Partner with our bookkeeping and CFO advisory teams to make sure year-end books are tax-ready and clients get one coordinated answer
- Communicate directly with clients, explaining complex tax issues in plain language
- Identify process improvements and help build checklists, templates, and automation that make our tax season smoother every year
- Stay current on federal and state tax law changes and share relevant updates with the team
- Own onboarding and process management for the tax department
Qualifications
Required:
- CPA or Enrolled Agent credential
- 5+ years of tax preparation and review experience, ideally in public accounting or a CPA firm environment
- Strong technical knowledge of pass-through entity, corporate, and individual taxation
- Experience reviewing others’ work and providing feedback or training
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain tax concepts to non-accountants
- Highly organized, with a track record of managing multiple deadlines across a large client base
- Comfortable working in a cloud-based, remote-friendly environment and learning new software quickly
Preferred:
- Experience with professional services clients
- Experience with multi-state filings and state-level compliance for income tax purposes
- Experience with entity formations (domestic and foreign state registrations) and payroll setup
- Proficiency with Quick Books Online and Drake
- Familiarity with practice management and client portal tools, such as Double, Liscio, or similar
- Experience working with or managing offshore or distributed teams
- Interest in tax planning and advisory work, not just compliance
