Main

duties of the job
  • Provide a comprehensive oncology service at Stoke Mandeville Hospital with possible cross‑site working at Wycombe Hospital.
  • Participate in outpatient clinics, multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, and contribute to the Acute Oncology Service through AOS consultant ward rounds (1 ward round per week).
  • Specialise in urology and lower gastrointestinal malignancies, managing 150–180 new patients per annum (1 new and 6 follow‑up patients per 3‑hour clinic).
  • Recruit patients into clinical trials, supported by an established Clinical Trials Unit.
  • Take on managerial/educational responsibilities (e.g., chemotherapy lead), medical student teaching, junior doctor supervision, and clinical governance activities (audit, risk management, quality improvement).
  • Undertake other duties appropriate for a consultant oncologist not otherwise specified.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING
  • CCT, CESR or recognised equivalent, or on Specialist Register or within six months of achieving CCT at the time of the interview.
  • MBChB or equivalent.
  • Full GMC registration.
  • MRCP or equivalent.
  • Higher degree or post‑graduate diploma.
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
  • High level of general skills, as expected from a fully trained applicant for a consultant post.
  • Good working knowledge and up to date experience of medical oncology.
  • Good spoken and written English. Communication skills should be highly developed.
PERSONAL QUALITIES, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Good team worker.
  • Ability to network with other directorates, clinicians & junior staff.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Willing to adapt to the changing needs of the service.
  • Ability to educate & train junior medical staff.
  • Ability to work in a pressurised environment.
