Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Database Administrator with deep expertise across relational (MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Postgre
SQL) and No
SQL databases. The ideal candidate has a proven track record of designing, implementing, and optimizing high-performance, highly available database environments both on-premises (VMs) and in the cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP). You will play a critical role in database architecture, large-scale migrations, performance tuning, security, and ensuring operational excellence in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
Design, implement, and maintain robust, secure, and scalable database architectures across MySQL, Maria
DB, Postgre
SQL, Microsoft SQL Server, and major No
SQL systems (Mongo
DB, Cassandra, Dynamo
DB, Redis, Elasticsearch, etc.).
Lead and execute complex database migrations (homogeneous and heterogeneous) including zero-downtime migrations, schema conversions, and cross-cloud/platform migrations.
Perform advanced performance tuning and optimization of databases and database servers at the query, index, storage, and OS level.
Optimize database workloads running on virtual machines (VMware, Hyper-V, KVM) and cloud-native environments (RDS, Aurora, Cloud SQL, Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, etc.).
Implement and manage high-availability and disaster-recovery solutions (replication, clustering, Always-On Availability Groups, Patroni, Galera, sharding, etc.).
Automate database provisioning, backups, monitoring, and deployments using Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, Cloud Formation, Ansible) and CI/CD pipelines.
Establish and enforce database security best practices (encryption at rest/in-transit, RBAC, auditing, masking, vulnerability management).
Capacity planning, cost optimization, and rightsizing of database instances in cloud environments.
Collaborate with development, Dev Ops, and platform teams to review schemas, queries, and application patterns for performance and scalability.
Participate in on-call rotation and act as escalation point for critical database incidents.
Required Qualifications & Experience
1.6-10 years of hands-on experience as a Database Administrator.
Expert-level knowledge and production experience with:
MySQL / Maria
DB (InnoDB & MyRocks)
Microsoft SQL Server (2016–2022+, Always-On, Failover Clustering)
Postgre
SQL (including advanced features: logical replication, extensions, Citus, Timescale
DB)
At least two major No
SQL databases (Mongo
DB, Dynamo
DB, Redis, Elasticsearch, etc.)
Proven track record of successful large-scale database migrations (hundreds of TBs and/or zero-downtime cutovers).
Extensive experience optimizing databases on virtualized environments (VMware, KVM) and major cloud providers (AWS RDS/Aurora, GCP Cloud SQL, Azure SQL).
Deep expertise in query optimization, execution plans, indexing strategies, partitioning, and storage engine selection.
Strong scripting and automation skills (Bash, Python, Power Shell) and proficiency with IaC tools (Terraform preferred).
Hands-on experience with monitoring and observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, New Relic, Cloud Watch, PMM, _statements, SQL Server DMVs, etc.).
Solid understanding of Linux/Windows systems internals as they relate to database performance (IO, memory, CPU, networking).
Preferred Skills
Certifications:
AWS Certified Database – Specialty, Microsoft Certified:
Azure Database Administrator Associate, Postgre
SQL Professional, Oracle/MySQL certifications are a plus.
Experience with database Dev Ops practices (Liquibase, Flyway, Git Ops for DB changes).
Knowledge of containerized databases (Kubernetes operators: Zalando Postgres, Crunchy Data, Mongo
DB Community Operator).
Familiarity with data warehousing (Redshift, Snowflake, Big Query) is a plus.
Personal Attributes
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a focus on root-cause analysis.
