About the Directorate

The Assurance and Public Protection directorate ensures democratic accountability of council services. The directorate work together to monitor and ensure compliance and provide assurance of Barnet being an engaged and effective council that protects the public purse. They provide enforcement services that engage and protect residents and businesses to support a safer and healthier borough. These are place-based roles, which require officers to primarily work from Barnet Council offices in Colindale or other locations across the borough.

About the Role

As a
Technical Trading Standards Officer
, you’ll deliver professional services that safeguard health, wellbeing, and consumer rights. This is a varied and challenging position where no two days are the same.

Responsibilities
  • ✅ Investigating complaints and suspected offences using statutory powers
  • ✅ Conducting inspections and sampling goods for compliance
  • ✅ Leading intelligence-driven enforcement activities, including test purchases
  • ✅ Preparing legal cases and presenting evidence in court
  • ✅ Advising businesses and consumers on compliance and rights
  • ✅ Staying up to date with legislation and best practice

About You
  • We’re looking for someone with:
  • A Trading Standards or Consumer Affairs qualification (or willingness to achieve this in post)
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a regulatory or investigative role
  • Strong knowledge of relevant laws and enforcement procedures
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills
  • Ability to manage caseloads and draft accurate legal documents
  • Competence in Microsoft Office and data systems
  • A flexible, adaptable approach and commitment to high standards
  • A driving licence is desirable.
