About the Directorate

The Assurance and Public Protection directorate ensures democratic accountability of council services. The directorate works together to monitor and ensure compliance and provide assurance of Barnet being an engaged and effective council that protects the public purse. They provide enforcement services that engage and protect residents and businesses to support a safer and healthier borough. In the Assurance and Public Protection directorate, we are committed to the work we do and the difference we make to residents and customers of Barnet every single day.

of Environmental Health, Consumer and Public Protection Counter Fraud and Trading Standards Manager Service Manager – Environmental Health (Commercial) Team Leader-Health and Safety Environmental Health Officer Senior Food Safety Officers x2 Public Health & Noise Nuisance Officers x2 Technical Scientific Officer Technical Trading Standards Officer

These are place-based roles, which require officers to primarily work from Barnet Council offices in Colindale or other locations across the borough.

Environmental Health Practitioner (Health & Safety)

We’re transforming the way Environmental Health services are delivered! Following a recent reorganisation, we’ve introduced a new structure focused on risk-based, proportionate approaches to statutory functions. This is an exciting time to join us and make a real impact.

We’re looking for experienced Environmental Health Practitioners (EHPs) to join our team. If you’re passionate about protecting public health and thrive in a dynamic environment, this could be the perfect opportunity for you.

What You’ll Do

✅Carry out health & safety enforcement functions—including inspections, investigations, and enforcement actions
✅Support food law enforcement work, including inspections
✅Work collaboratively to ensure compliance and safeguard communities

What We’re Looking For

✅Registered Environmental Health Practitioner
✅Qualification listed in the Food Law Code of Practice to deliver official food controls
✅Experience in health & safety inspections and enforcement action
Proven track record in food law enforcement within a local authority setting
✅Practical experience in complaint investigations
