Specialist Nurse – Adult Epilepsy
Location: Cheswold Park Hospital – Apollo Court Medical Centre, 45 High Street, Dodworth, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, S75 3RF
Working pattern: 30 hours per week – Part‑time, Flexible working
Contract: Permanent – Band 6, Pay £38,682 to £46,580 per annum

Job Summary- Provide specialist assessment, medical management and education for adults with epilepsy, including in clinics, home visits and virtual appointments.
- Advise patients, families, carers and professionals on diagnosis, management and self‑management of epilepsy.
- Work autonomously with a defined caseload and support the clinical team’s continuous improvement of service delivery.
- Maintain clinical governance, record keeping and infection control in line with trust policies.
- Take part in training, education, supervision and appraisal activities for colleagues and other health professionals.
- Carry out triage, assessment and management of complex presentations, ensuring timely referrals and evidence‑based treatment plans.
- Use specialist skills to manage medication changes, liaising with consultants and GPs as required.
- Deliver education and support to improve patient self‑management and reduce admissions.
- Assist with transition of young adults from paediatric to adult care.
- Contribute to service development, policy review and nursing governance frameworks.
- Provide nurse prescribing where indicated and maintain accurate records per NMC guidelines.
Essential
- Registered nurse with substantial post‑registration experience.
- Recent experience caring for adults with epilepsy and working within a multidisciplinary team.
- Up‑to‑date knowledge of epilepsy nursing practice and medical management.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and team‑working skills.
- Ability to work autonomously, prioritise and manage own caseload.
- Knowledge of clinical governance, audit and quality improvement.
- Proficiency with IT systems (Microsoft Word, Systm One, Outlook).
- Current UK professional registration and valid driving licence (or reasonable adjustment considered).
Desirable
- Experience in a community or outpatient setting.
- Teaching qualification.
- Independent nurse prescriber status.
- Diploma/degree in epilepsy care or willingness to commence within the first year.
This role meets the UK Visas and Immigration minimum sponsorship requirements.
All staff are encouraged to have up‑to‑date influenza vaccination.
Disclosure and Barring Service check required under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.
