We are seeking a new team member to join the Data & Digital Preservation department as a Digital Media Specialist – Access.

The successful candidate will be responsible for digital access and preservation of audiovisual digital media within the BFI National Archive collections. Key responsibilities include transcoding, media management, quality control, and digital preservation tasks, utilizing relevant tools to meet access and preservation standards and deadlines.

Requirements include a vocational qualification or equivalent experience in professional audiovisual technology or moving image archives, along with experience working with digital media formats and audiovisual technologies. The candidate should be capable of diagnosing technical issues and understanding the challenges associated with digital access and preservation.

Key responsibilities:

  • Perform technical functions on digital media including transcoding, media management, normalization, quality control, uploading to transfer solutions, and ingesting to digital preservation infrastructure.
  • Operate technical equipment related to digital access and preservation, such as workstations, transcoding software, Quality Control tools, and data storage peripherals.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to specify, verify, and ensure quality standards and deadlines are met.

Skills & Experience:

  • Experience with a variety of digital audiovisual formats, equipment, and software.
  • Understanding of digital audiovisual formats such as Digital Cinema Packages, Apple Pro Res / Quicktime, DPX, and open-source formats like FFV1 / Matroska.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues with digital media.
  • Familiarity with operating systems including Windows, Mac OS, or Linux.
