Occupational Therapy Assistant – Children’s Residential Services (EBD)
Location:
Bexley, London
Residential Home
Reports to:
Registered Manager / Clinical Lead / Occupational Therapist
Hours:
Part-time or full-time (flexible; may include some evenings to support routines)
Job Purpose
The Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) supports the delivery of occupational therapy informed interventions for children and young people with Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (EBD) living in a residential setting. The role focuses on promoting emotional regulation, sensory integration, daily living skills, independence, and participation in meaningful activities, under the guidance of a qualified Occupational Therapist.
Key Responsibilities
* Support children by following occupational therapy care plans and programmes.
* Help children develop emotional regulation, coping skills, and sensory processing abilities.
* Carry out therapeutic activities that support daily routines, transitions, and engagement.
* Encourage independence in self-care, play, and everyday life skills.
* Use sensory tools and strategies and help maintain a sensory-friendly home environment.
* Build positive and trusting relationships with children and support them during emotional distress.
* Work closely with the Occupational Therapist and other professionals, sharing observations and feedback.
* Keep accurate records and always follow safeguarding, confidentiality, and professional standards.
Person Specification
Essential
* Experience working with children or young people with EBD, trauma, neurodiversity, or additional needs.
* Understanding of occupational therapy principles or sensory integration approaches (formal or experiential).
* Ability to engage children in therapeutic or structured activities.
* Calm, patient, and resilient approach to behaviour that may challenge.
* Good written and verbal communication skills.
* Willingness to work shifts, including weekends and nights.
* Enhanced DBS check (Children’s Barred List) – required.
Desirable
* Relevant qualification or training (e.g. OT Assistant, Psychology, Health & Social Care, SEN).
* Experience working under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist.
* Knowledge of trauma-informed care and attachment-aware practice.
* Experience in residential children’s services or SEN settings.
Training & Supervision
* Induction and ongoing training aligned to children’s residential services.
* Regular supervision from a qualified Occupational Therapist or Clinical Lead.
