Job Overview:
The Pathology departments at University Hospitals North Tees and Hartlepool (NTH) and South Tees Hospitals (STH) are working collaboratively to develop a joint service called Tees Valley Pathology (TVP) with services being delivered on all hospital sites. We are seeking applications from suitable enthusiastic candidates for a full‑time position to join our scientific team and participate in the delivery of services provided by Cellular Pathology.
The Cellular pathology service is part of the TVP service operating out of University Hospital North Tees and Hartlepool Hospital, Stockton on Tees, Hartlepool Hospital, The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough and the Friarage Hospital, Northallerton.
Main duties of the job:
The post holder will work as part of a dedicated, multi‑skilled and flexible team of staff in order to provide an efficient, high‑quality service within the Cellular Pathology department. The post holder will follow an in‑house competency training programme and, after suitable training and competency assessment, will work on a rotational basis performing an extensive range of laboratory support tasks and assisting consultant and technical staff in the preparation of histological and cytological specimens.
The post holder will work under direct and indirect supervision always following laboratory standard operating procedures (SOP’s). The post holder will be expected to deal with direct queries from Medical Staff, Nursing Staff and other Service Users including telephone enquiries and taking appropriate action as necessary. This role may include the training and supervision of other scientific and administrative staff and will assist in the monitoring, organisation and working of the department.

Working hours:
07:00 – 18:00 Monday to Friday including a 1:6 Saturday rotation.

Qualifications- NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualification (e.g., Completed IBMS certificate Part I)
- Evidence of experience of working in a laboratory environment
- Can demonstrate experience of working within guidelines and policies
- Experience of computer packages (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Awareness of both internal and external environment in which the department operates
- Accurate transcription of written / verbal / electronic information
- Ability to work with little direct supervision
- Basic understanding of medical terminology
- Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation associated with hazardous chemicals / bodily fluids
- Ability to work effectively as an individual or part of a team
- Evidence of ability to work under pressure whilst delivering high quality work
