Job overview

To work flexibly within a dental team providing high quality care to a wide spectrum of patients within the Dental Service, based at Birmingham Dental Hospital (BDH) including Mobile Clinics and/or additional external sites as required.

To provide chair side assistance to clinicians within the dental service.

To carry out clerical and administrative duties to ensure efficient operation of the clinic/department.

Main duties of the job
  • Maintain a high standard of patient care and confidentiality within all dental clinics throughout the service.
  • Provide comprehensive chair side and administrative support to the clinician.
  • Prepare and monitor patients for and during their dental treatment, providing pre and post operative instructions as required.
  • Undertake the general care of the surgery including dental equipment/instruments (medical devices) and arrange any necessary repairs as required.
  • Ensure medical emergency drugs and equipment are available and up to date.
  • Provide chair side assistance and postoperative instructions during general anaesthetic and exodontia sessions as required.
  • Provide oral health education to patients as required by the clinician.
  • Assist the Senior Dental Nurse in the smooth running of the Dental service.
  • Support and assist clinicians including all student disciplines.
  • Support and supervise all apprentice nurses, undergraduate groups.

Person specification Qualifications / training
  • A Dental Nurse qualification that enables registration with the General Dental Council i.e. NVQ Level 3, Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing or Dental Nursing National Certificate in Dental Nursing / Gained entry onto GDC register via grand-parenting (pre 2008)
  • Registered with the General Dental Council
Experience
  • Relevant experience working as part of a dental team, e.g. General Practice, Hospital, other Primary Dental Services / Community Dental Services experiencing chair side duties
  • Experience of working with children, elderly, medically compromised patients, and patients with learning disabilities
Skills/knowledge
  • To interact professionally with individuals
  • Understand the principles of confidentiality
  • Up to date knowledge in all areas of dental nursing
  • Ability to work under pressure and on own initiative
  • Organisational skills
