Band 5 Specialist Dental Nurse – Orthodontics
Job Summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic, dynamic and forward‑thinking Specialist Dental Nurse to join the Orthodontic Team at Birmingham Dental Hospital. The team delivers a range of orthodontic treatments, including joint clinics with Restorative, Maxillofacial and Paediatric colleagues, and also serves Glebefields Health Centre. The successful postholder will travel to support both locations.
- Support clinical management of the specialty and provide high‑standard patient care across all dental clinics.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and manage patients with complex dental, social and medical needs.
- Handle stock control, rotation and ordering of dental consumables from appropriate suppliers.
- Prepare and maintain specialised dental equipment and safely dispose of clinical waste, including bodily fluids.
- Record pre‑operative patient assessments (height, weight, blood pressure).
- Provide clinical nursing support for radiography within the department.
- Identify staff and students requiring additional training and liaise with the Dental Nurse Manager and Tutor.
- Support the School of Dental Nursing, University of Birmingham and relevant Heads of Service in team training.
- Adhere to procedures and implement local, divisional and Trust policies.
- Implement Clinical Governance & Quality Improvement initiatives relevant to the specialty.
- Carry out any other duties specified by the Dental Nurse Manager or Tutor.
- Dental Nursing Qualification.
- Post‑qualification in Dental Radiography and/or Orthodontic Nursing.
- GDC Registration.
- Evidence of CPD in the specialty.
- Significant experience in a wide variety of dentistry.
- Computer literacy.
- Experience supporting undergraduates and post‑registration staff to deliver high‑quality patient care and achieve educational standards.
- Evidence of service quality improvement leading to improved patient outcomes (desirable).
- Informal and formal assessment experience in an educational or healthcare environment (desirable).
Band 5, 7.5 hours per week (0.2 WTE). Per diem work schedule to be discussed. Permanent, part‑time position. Salary: £31,049 – £37,796 per annum (pro‑rata).
