We are seeking to recruit a substantive Consultant Anaesthetist, to join our friendly and supportive department. Current team comprises 27 consultants, 5 specialist (SAS) doctors, 7 Anaesthesia Associates and 8 rotating registrars from the Birmingham School of Anaesthesia.
This advert is for a whole‑time consultant role (10.5 PAs). On‑call commitment equates to 1:8 covering theatres and level 2 critical care services. Job plans will include 1.5 core SPA with up to 1 SPA available on taking on additional roles.
Successful applicants could contribute to completing ACSA within two years.
Within our department are five substantive anaesthetic specialty doctors and rotational Anaesthetists in Training who run theatre sessions, pre‑operative assessment sessions and cover the resident high dependency rota. Interview date: 03rd February, 2026. There are also seven anaesthetic associates working under a consultant anaesthetist in line with RCOA recommendations in a ratio of 1:1 or 1:2. Twin theatre working is embedded in our rota.
The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital offers many procedures for which this post can provide anaesthesia, including complex arthroplasty (revision), spinal surgery (degenerative and deformity), musculoskeletal oncology surgery, and anaesthesia for interventional radiology. Successful applicants will have an interest in peri‑operative medicine, anaesthesia for complex orthopaedics and regional anaesthesia. Consultants also contribute to preoperative assessment, the High Dependency Unit, acute and chronic pain;
we are developing an acute pain service to complement the critical care outreach service.
Outside clinical practice the anaesthetic department is heavily involved in teaching for a peri‑operative medicine module for Aston University and has strong presence in clinical governance, research and management within the hospital. We encourage clinicians to develop non‑clinical interests.

Our Trust is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. We are a Disability Confident Leader, offering inclusive, family‑friendly and flexible working arrangements and policies.
