As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be part of a multidisciplinary consultancy environment, working on projects that span energy, infrastructure, healthcare and education, commercial and transportation. If you’re passionate about low‑carbon design, technical excellence and mentoring others, this is your chance to make a meaningful impact and help shape the future of mechanical engineering at RPS Tetra Tech.

Purpose

& Scope of the Role

We are looking for an experienced mechanical engineer to lead the design and delivery of HVAC systems, domestic water services and above‑ground drainage across a range of new‑build and refurbishment projects. You will produce specifications, condition survey reports and technical documentation, while engaging regularly with clients and colleagues across engineering, architecture and planning disciplines. This role offers a blend of technical leadership, stakeholder engagement and project management, with a strong focus on supporting the transition to a low‑carbon economy through de‑carbonisation and grid upgrade initiatives.

You will also play a key role in the growth of our national Building Services team.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and delivery of HVAC systems, domestic water services and above‑ground drainage.
  • Produce specifications, condition survey reports and technical documentation for new‑build and refurbishment projects.
  • Engage regularly with clients and multidisciplinary colleagues to ensure high‑quality, compliant solutions.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support the development of best practice and continuous improvement.
  • Apply low‑carbon technologies and sustainable design principles to all projects.
  • Manage project budgets, programme timelines and quality assurance, ensuring all deliverables meet agreed standards and deadlines.
  • Identify practical solutions, improve design efficiency and propose greener, more sustainable alternatives.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering, or significant equivalent work experience supported with BTEC qualifications.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership with IET or CIBSE is highly desirable.
  • Substantial experience in the design and delivery of mechanical building services across sectors such as energy, infrastructure, healthcare, education, commercial and transportation.
  • Strong knowledge of CIBSE guidance, Part L and BREEAM, and ability to apply this knowledge to ensure efficient, compliant and client‑focused solutions.
  • Familiarity with low‑carbon technologies and sustainable design principles.
  • Hands‑on experience with design software including Hevacomp, MagiCAD, AutoCAD, Navisworks and MS Excel;
    Revit and IES experience preferable.
Technical Knowledge and Peer Engagement
  • Confident contribution to interdisciplinary design meetings and peer‑to‑peer technical discussions.
  • Ability to challenge briefs, propose innovative alternatives and articulate complex engineering concepts clearly.
  • Proficient in design software such as AMTEC Dialux / Relux, AutoCAD, Navisworks and MS Excel.
  • Revit and IES experience preferable.
Design Experience and Delivery
  • Produce and review detailed mechanical designs, including spatial planning, thermal calculations and system coordination.
  • Oversee drawing production, manage design quality and ensure outputs meet client expectations.
Project Management Responsibilities
  • Manage the delivery of mechanical building services projects, including responsibility for budgets, programme timelines and quality assurance.
  • Plan and prioritise workloads across multiple concurrent projects, coordinate resources and ensure all deliverables meet agreed standards and deadlines.
  • Manage client expectations, track progress and maintain financial control.
