Job Description

What You’ll Be Doing

You’ll collaborate with ecologists, landscape architects, engineers and environmental specialists to deliver arboricultural services that protect trees and promote biodiversity.

Your Responsibilities May Include
  • Tree Surveys & Assessments – Conduct BS5837:2012 surveys for projects from local to national scale.
  • Technical Reporting – Prepare method statements, scoping assessments, health and safety reports, and veteran tree assessments.
  • Ecological Collaboration – Support protected species surveys, including tree climbing for bat inspections.
  • Design & Protection – Advise on statutory designations (e.g. TPOs, Conservation Areas, Ancient Woodland) and design bespoke tree protection measures.
  • Site Supervision – Oversee contractors to ensure tree protection is upheld throughout project delivery.
  • Interdisciplinary Engagement – Embed tree protection into project design with landscape, heritage, environmental management and engineering teams.
  • Professional Development – Refine report writing and technical skills with support from mentors and training programmes.

  • East West Rail – Technical leads coordinating survey and assessment work.
  • Ash Dieback – AI and machine‑learning approach to identify and assess ash dieback disease.
  • National Highways – BS5837:2012 surveys for projects such as A428 Blackcat to Gibbet, A303 Stonehenge, Lower Thames Crossing.
  • Environment Agency – Habitat creation and flood alleviation projects (Hebden Bridge Flood Alleviation Scheme, Five Rivers).
  • Water companies – Thames Water, Southern Water, Scottish Water, Welsh Water, Wessex, United Utilities.
  • Network Rail – Long‑standing national partnership.
  • Local Authorities – Broad range of environmental services.
Candidate Specification

We seek committed graduates with genuine passion and a desire to make a difference. Eligibility requires less than 12 months of relevant experience (excluding placements) and one of the following:

  • Degree in Arboriculture or Forestry.
  • Degree in a related environmental discipline (ecology, environmental management, etc.) with demonstrable arboricultural experience.

In your application, demonstrate interest in the role and Mott Mac Donald through relevant modules, work experience, or research.
