Senior Estimator – Civil Engineering & Groundworks

Location: Birmingham (flexible working options)

Our client is a respected civil engineering and groundworks contractor with a strong national presence. They are looking for a Senior Estimator to join their expanding commercial team as they continue to grow.

This role is ideal for an experienced estimator with a background in groundworks, civil engineering or infrastructure who is looking to play a key role in a family-founded business known for quality delivery, long-term client relationships and a collaborative working culture.

• Record, review and prioritise new tender opportunities.
• Analyse tender documentation including drawings, specifications, site investigations and scope of works.
• Work closely with commercial, production, planning and procurement teams.
• Carry out accurate take-offs and produce BOQs using appropriate software.
• Obtain, assess and compare subcontractor and supplier quotations.
• Price bills and schedules analytically from first principles.
• Identify risks, opportunities and value engineering options.
• Review client programmes to ensure alignment with outputs, methodology and sequencing.
• Lead tender adjudications and present findings to senior leadership.
• Prepare and submit detailed tender submissions including assumptions and clarifications.
• Attend client mid-, pre- and post-tender meetings.
• Produce handover documentation for delivery teams.
• Maintain strong customer relationships and obtain feedback on submissions.
• Support the development of trainee estimators.
• Maintain cost databases, historical data and benchmarking records.
• Provide accurate reporting and commercial insight to senior management.

• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in estimating within civil engineering, groundworks or a related field.
• Knowledge of JCT and NEC3 / 4 forms of contract.
• Strong commercial and analytical skills.
• Understanding of project risks, opportunities and value engineering.
• Practical knowledge of SMM7, CESSM, Highway MMR, NRM or similar measurement standards.
• Higher-level qualification in Construction or Civil Engineering.

• Previous civil engineering or groundworks experience.
• Experience using Conquest or similar estimating software.
• Working towards professional membership (RICS, ICE, CIOB).

• High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a wider team.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to influence at all levels.
• Resilience when working to fixed deadlines.
• Proven ability to maintain strong customer relationships.
• Track record of preparing tenders for groundworks, civil engineering and highways projects.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel;
  Conquest experience is advantageous.
