The post holder will be part of the Occupational Health Service based at University Hospitals Birmingham. The post holder will contribute to improving the quality of working life by the effective provision of a comprehensive Occupational Health Service to the staff University Hospitals Birmingham and staff or students of organisations that have a contract with the occupational health service, promoting the health, safety and well-being of staff in line with the organisation's objectives.

The post holder will, following a period of induction and assessment, be responsible for the management of immunisation and vaccination clinics. The post holder will be expected to be self-directed with the ability to prioritise their own work in their clinic role and will be supported by senior Occupational Health Advisors.

This is a post in the specialist field of occupational health, and the post holder will have the opportunity to undertake appropriate courses of study in order to develop their clinical skills and knowledge to fulfil the role of a Clinic Nurse in the first instance. The post holder will be based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital but from time to time the post holder may need to cross cover at the Birmingham Heartlands/Good Hope and Solihull Hospitals in the provision given by the Occupational Health Service.

duties of the job Responsibility for Client Care
  • Ensure all new staff have a suitable standard of fitness for their proposed role; are made aware of the potential risks to health from their work and offered appropriate immunisation to protect them.
  • Organise and provide clinics to the service users as required. This may include immunisations/vaccinations, phlebotomy, spirometry, vision screening.
  • General health assessment and advice to both clients and managers.
  • Responsible for the safe use of equipment including calibration of technical equipment.
  • Responsible for maintaining stock control and for security of stock. This includes safe transportation of vaccines.
  • Perform a comprehensive assessment under the supervision of a qualified and experienced OH Nurse Practitioner of client needs following short‑or long‑term absence.
  • Provide first line confidential counselling for staff in relation to work and non‑work‑related issues, with referral to other agencies as appropriate.
  • Provide support to and/or refer on clients who are unable to return to work to the Occupational Health Medical Officer.
  • Assess any staff member following an exposure/sharps incident and take appropriate action. This may require the use of post exposure prophylaxis and referral to Occupational Health Medical Officer.
  • Follow up contacts of communicable diseases where indicated, taking appropriate action if necessary.
