Technical Author – Inorganic Chemicals – UK BAT
As a Technical Author within the UK BAT team at the Environment Agency, you’ll help shape new environmental standards for industry by drafting Best Available Techniques (BAT) Conclusions and liaising with technical working groups.
Responsibilities- Draft and publish BAT Conclusions for large-volume inorganic chemical (LVIC) installations.
- Coordinate with Technical Working Groups to ensure comprehensive and evidence‑based decisions.
- Prepare and present final documents suitable for publication as UK‑wide environmental standards.
- Use smart tools to stay connected, while travelling and overnight stays may be required.
- Support inclusive incident management objectives within your development plan.
- Collaborate with the Environment & Business Directorate, DEFRA and the Standards Council on progress and delivery.
- At least 5 years of working experience with environmental regulation in the LVIC industry.
- Specialist knowledge of the large‑volume inorganic chemicals industry and UK/EU environmental legislation, including the IED and Environmental Permitting Regulations.
- Strong analytical skills to critically evaluate technical arguments and data.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, capable of conveying complex information clearly and persuasively.
- Experience in building and maintaining professional relationships across diverse stakeholders.
- Effective project‑management skills and a drive to deliver projects on time.
- Ability to work flexibly across different backgrounds and cultures, encouraging diversity issues in your work.
- Collection and technical analysis of complex industrial data.
- Understanding of BAT conclusions’ implications for permits, industry, and the environment.
- Planning, prioritising and organising tasks and resources to meet deadlines.
- Responding flexibly to challenges and building consensus.
- Ability to influence and persuade others through data‑driven arguments.
- Achievement of results, resilience under pressure, and continuous improvement.
