Role Overview

The Maintenance Manager will be responsible for ensuring smooth running, safety and upkeep of the Bodmin Jail Museum and its grounds. This role requires a hands‑on, proactive individual with broad practical skills across multiple trades, including gardening, woodwork, electrics, plumbing and general building maintenance. The successful candidate will have excellent attention to detail and a strong sense of pride in maintaining a historic visitor‑facing site.

Key Responsibilities
  • Daily Maintenance & Upkeep
    • Carry out routine inspections of the museum, grounds and facilities.
    • Perform day‑to‑day repairs, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work and general building upkeep.
    • Maintain cleanliness and presentation standards in public and back‑of‑house areas.
  • Gardening & Grounds Care
    • Ensure gardens, pathways and external spaces are well maintained, safe and visually appealing.
    • Undertake seasonal planting, pruning, weeding and lawn care.
  • Installations & Projects
    • Assist with setting up exhibitions, displays and installations.
    • Support event preparations and dismantling when required.
    • Carry out “making good” tasks after installations or maintenance work.
  • Health, Safety & Compliance
    • Proactively identify and address potential hazards and maintenance issues.
    • Ensure compliance with relevant health and safety regulations.
    • Carry out basic risk assessments for tasks as needed.
  • Teamwork & Support
    • Work closely with the Operations team to ensure a high‑quality visitor environment.
    • Provide maintenance support during events, tours and seasonal activities.
Skills & Experience Required
  • Proven experience in a similar maintenance role, ideally within heritage sites, hospitality or visitor attractions.
  • Strong practical skills in woodworking, plumbing, electrics and general repairs.
  • Gardening knowledge and ability to maintain outdoor spaces.
  • Proactive problem‑solving with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and work independently.
  • Good communication skills and a collaborative approach.
  • Flexible attitude, with willingness to work occasional evenings or weekends for events.
