Job Description

We're excited to announce that we are hiring for a HSE Adviser and Environmental Specialist to support the delivery of a multi‑year HSE Strategy, which:

  • Delivers against our Goal Zero ambition.
  • Promotes and enhances the health and wellbeing of our employees.
  • Protects and enhances the Jealott's Hill environment.
  • Furthers the HSE maturity of the site.

Within this role you will act as the site subject matter expert in environment management and sustainability by owning and developing the site environmental management system, and all associated processes and systems to ensure conformance with the Syngenta HSE Management System, all applicable UK HSE applications and best practices, while leading and implementing associated improvements to protect and enhance the environment.

Further key responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the delivery of a multi-year HSE Strategy by providing competent, professional and independent science‑biased HSE advice across a broad range of Health, Safety and Environment disciplines.
  • Monitoring and interpreting changes in legislation, Syngenta HSE Standards, CoPs (Code of Practice) and Guidance to ensure all requirements are implemented, while liaising with Regulatory Authorities to ensure applicable licences/permits are gained and retained.
  • Identifying, developing and leading the implementation of HSE improvement programmes, including defined HSE projects.
  • Maintaining auditable records of all activities, policies, and procedures.
  • Provide relevant HSE training, while acting as an ambassador for HSE.
  • Attending and pro‑actively contributing to inspections, HSE work‑groups & the site HSE Committee meetings.
  • Collating and analysing HSE performance data, including leading and lagging indicators, to identify trends and improvements, and to communicate compellingly and visually with the organisation.
  • Collaborating with the broader Infrastructure team across investments, projects, purchasing, and maintenance, to ensure HSE is effectively integrated into all our activities.
Qualifications

What we are looking for

  • Educated to degree level in an engineering, chemical, biology or environmental science subject.
  • NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent Health and Safety qualification (essential); NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent (preferred) with Environmental management qualification (e.g. IEMA or equivalent).
  • Auditor and Incident Investigator training is essential, lead auditor or investigator training is desirable (any ISO requirement – 14001 or 45001), so as experience with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 standards.
  • A good working knowledge of common HSE systems and platforms (e.g. Enablon).
  • Minimum ISEP and/or Grad IOSH Membership (working towards chartership).
  • Broad experience within health, safety and environmental management, ideally in the life sciences, or similar industry, including across laboratory, office, and construction environments.
  • Experience of working with UK Regulatory bodies (e.g. EA, DEFRA).
  • Experience conducting risk assessments, audits, emergency response and incident investigations.
  • Sustainability reporting – SBTi, UNSDG, ESOS etc experience.
  • Experience of working in a complex global business or working on a large campus in an international and multidisciplinary team environment.
