Nuclear Radiation Protection, Shielding, and Transport Engineer I
Join to apply for the Nuclear Radiation Protection, Shielding, and Transport Engineer I role at Holtec International
Holtec International and its subsidiary companies are designing an unfailingly safe and secure source of clean energy using nuclear fission, called the SMR-300 small modular reactor. The position is offered by SMR LLC as a member of the Holtec International family, a global turnkey supplier of equipment and systems for nuclear, solar, geothermal, and fossil power generation sectors of the energy industry.
Come join a growing multidisciplinary team of designers and engineers designing the next generation nuclear power plant.
Holtec International is seeking Nuclear Core Design Engineers to perform reactor physics analysis and benchmarking activities in support of the nuclear core design, as needed for development and licensing of the SMR-300 PWR integral light water reactor. This position requires a highly‑motivated individual with flexibility and willingness to work on a wide array of technical and regulatory topics, and eagerness to learn new skills to create feasible/practical solutions to challenging design problems.
The engineer will be part of a team executing a U.S. Government cost‑shared development program requiring efficient completion of engineering assignments.
- Determine radiation source terms and transport to various systems and components at the SMR-300 plant during normal operation and transient conditions.
- Develop radiation protection design features and perform radiation shielding, occupational exposure, and site dose assessment for the SMR-300 plant during normal operation and transient conditions.
- Prepare report documentation for licensing purposes.
- Participate in meetings with clients, collaborators, and with the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
- Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering or Physics (or closely related field) from an accredited college or university.
- 5+ years of demonstrated experience in the nuclear industry or a similarly applicable environment (academia or national laboratory).
- Demonstrated experience and proficiency with radiation source‑term, shielding, and radiological‑consequence dose assessment tools (e.g., MCNP, ADVANTG, SCALE, GALE, ARCON
96, RADTRAD or other applicable analysis code packages). - Adequate knowledge of nuclear power plant operations and ALARA principles/programs.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency required in Microsoft Office suite of PC applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Eligibility to work under Department of Energy 10 CFR Part 810.
- PhD in nuclear engineering with emphasis on radiation protection and dose assessment.
- 10+ years of professional experience in the nuclear industry or similar, especially performing engineering calculations/evaluations.
- Experience performing radiological release and transport calculations to evaluate dose to workers and the public.
- Experience with computer languages such as Python.
- Experience preparing licensing documents for submission to the NRC and comprehensive knowledge of NUREG-0800 (NRC Standard Review Plan for LWRs) Chapters 11, 12, and 15 requirements.
